Many fans of survival-horror have been left somewhat in the dust of more action-focused horror since the release of Resident Evil 4. When the original Dead Space arrived in 2008, most felt that EA Redwood Shores had done right by fans of the dying genre. In 2011, Dead Space 2 was released and, while still a very solid and scary game, it seemed as if the studio, now called Visceral Games, had focused a considerable amount of their efforts on creating gigantic and visceral (Oh, now I get it) set pieces. The setting felt much less claustrophobic, the monsters felt less aggressive. It certainly had it's share of horrifying moments (seriously, those baby things!?), but many fans of the original felt as if the series had gone too far off rails to be considered a worthy sequel.
Dead Space 3, or at least what I can tell from the demo, seems to have all but abandoned the original'sÂ tightly-enclosed setting and horror-focused action. Instead of the tight corridors of the USG IshimuraÂ from the first game, or the slightly-less-tight corridors of the Sprawl, Isaac Clarke instead finds himself on the desolate and snow-covered planet Tau Volantis, beforeÂ mercilessnessÂ throwing a horrifyingly disfigured monster in your face. One would be correct in assuming that the frozen planet would induce quite a few less spine-tingling moments, however what surprised me most was the way in which Visceral Games uses blustering snow to make the atmosphere claustrophobic again (it's kind of their trademark). While exposed, Isaac is forced to walk more slowly while holding his arm up to shield his (already shielded) face. The distance which you are able to see is not very far. Anything could be lingering just beyond the snow, and it does.
The most effective moments of the demo come in two parts: jump-scares that utilize the comfort of the bright setting and the edge-of-your-seat set pieces (of which the demo only has one).

The timing of the jump-scares (a term that I used to describe the types of scares that make you, well, jump) is down-right artful, allowing the player to just start to feel comfortable; to just begin thinking they're to the next checkpoint where they can take a quick breath before trudging along in the snowy landscapes of Tau Volantis, beforeÂ mercilesslyÂ throwing a horrifyingly disfigured monster in your face. It's this sense of always having something ahead, be it a monster, set piece, or safe area, that keeps you always moving forward, even if it's cautiously.
The other thing that Visceral Games has become masters of is set piece moments. While Call of Duty developers Infinity Ward and Treyarch might be the very bestÂ at handling these, Visceral might just be the next best. Perhaps what makes them so good is that we never are pulled away from the action. If this were a movie, it'd be Children of Men; action is neverÂ interruptedÂ by a cut scene or by changing to another camera angle. We witness Isaac's struggles as he would.
Quick-time events are less distracting in Dead Space 3 than in most games. The location of the button-indicators feel organic, and should you not press a button in time, the reaction on Isaac's part feels wholly natural. This has always been what has made Dead Space such a special series to me.
The biggest addition to Dead Space 3 is, of course, the cooperative campaign. Many of the same fans that were worried with the direction that the series has been headed in were understandably up-in-arms over this seemingly tacked-on inclusion. And while I can't agree that co-op feels tacked on, I can say that the inclusion doesn't feel quite right.
The idea of fighting off the Necromorphs with a buddy is undeniably un-scary. Not only do formerly frightening moments feel less dangerous (because your friend can almost always get you back on your feet), nothing is scarier than being alone on a desolate planet. I can't deny that the co-op is fun, but it does create a different mood; the atmosphere is much less AlienÂ and a lot more Lethal Weapon.
Perhaps the most offensive thing that Dead Space 3's co-op does though is it forces breaks in the action. While playing alone allows the game to wait for you to get to an exact spot without once cutting away before beginning a set-piece, playing co-op does the opposite of this. In the one major quick-time event that the demo does offer, Issac has to crawl up a snow tractor as it slowly falls off of a cliff. While playing alone, the moment is incredible, feeling like something right out of a really well-made action film. Playing with a friend means that there is a short (seriously, maybe a half-second) black screen while the scene loads and characters are placed in the correct positions. The actual quick-time event is honestly pretty cool, but it's that small break in the action that completely pulls you away from the action, and, more importantly, it's something that doesn't happen while playing alone.
I know that my complaints might sound nit-picky, and they are, but when given the option between playing alone or with a friend, even if the co-op is handled otherwise extremely well, I'll choose playing alone nine times out of ten.
The demo is relatively lengthy, at approximately 30 minutes. And it's plenty of time to demonstrate a myriad of other smaller, yet still important, features. The mostÂ prominentÂ of these is the way that the work bench is now used. Isaac will be required to find various items around the world via killing various enemies (which now include gun-wielding humans). These items in turn can be used to create add-ons for his weapons or used to craft entirely new items. The demo provides you with several blue-prints (used to build new weapons), but I doubt this will be in the retail version of the game. I would imagine that blue-prints will be hidden throughout levels, and there will be trophies and achievements for finding all of them.
Based on this demo, I think it's safe to call Dead Space 3 a likely great action game, but not as scary as the original. This also seems to be the general consensus on Dead Space 2, and fans who loved the second game will probably still enjoy the third game. The inclusion of Dead Space 3's cooperative mode is probably going to help sell a few more units, but ultimately it feels wrong for this series.

The next step was to work up the blocked out colour roughs into slightly more pinned down black and white sketches. I decided to still keep the sketches fairly loose though as I wanted to have room to play around in the clean up. I wanted to experiment with the techniques as I went along without being too tied down, and the sketches provided a structured 'blue-print' to work around.

Sarah Porter's slides covered what the JISC offers on the topic of Data Management. They recognize the need for institutional policies, and clarity over roles and responsibilities within an institution. Researchers often define "data" very differently. FOI requests at Universities are increasing.
On top of this cycle, Simon imposed an institutional cycle, to support good data management practice: this is rather a blue-print for how an institution can respond: It begins with 'Guidance and Policy Development' and goes on to 'Training and Information'. Then there is 'Support for Data Management Planning' and then 'RDM Systems and infrastructure' and then 'Publication and Citation mechanisms' (recognition, rewards and benefits for data sharing, etc). There then follows a flurry of useful links. I've collated links from both presentations which stood out for me, below.

Under the leadership of Divya, Santhu is having a great time managing the team. He is a kind of an asshole who plays a double role according to the situations(two-face stupid cunt). He has a fake smile and never been frank, his social behavior is good but its too shallow and transparent, anyone can tell that he is putting an act as a nice guy and not being original himself. Srini on other-hand is really a nice guy and puts more effort in completing tasks. As it was earlier, Divya is knows santhu well because they are working for this company for a long time and also they share similar cultural background. Srini is new to company yet Divya has a positive impression on him because he works really hard and also he has a sympathetic innocent face.

Here are two recent headlines about efforts to begin the transition to paying for highways based on miles driven rather than gallons of fuel:
Both articles suggest serious problems with public and political perceptions of what this transition is all about.
The difficulty is also reflected in a June 2017 report from the Mineta Transportation Institute (at San Jose State University), summarizing eight years of an ongoing national survey on federal tax options to support highways, transit and local roads. Given a choice among 10 tax increase options—eight versions of a federal gas tax increase, a new federal transportation sales tax, or a national mileage tax of one cent per mile—the last-place finisher was the per-mile tax, with only 23% support.
A common element in all three cases is presenting a per-mile charge (1) as a tax rather than a user fee, and (2) as a net tax increase (rather than as an initially revenue-neutral change that would not lose purchasing power in coming years, as fuel taxes will do).
A sometimes-insightful report last year from the Congressional Research Service, “Mileage-Based Road User Charges,” does use better terminology, but begins with the premise that the way forward is a single national MBUF that would replenish the Highway Trust Fund and also deliver revenue directly to the states. That’s exactly backwards from what most transportation researchers and state DOTs envision. Almost everyone sees the transition as being led by states that reach consensus on replacing their fuel tax with MBUFs, thereby working out ways of gaining political acceptance that other states—and perhaps eventually Congress—can learn from.
I suggest that one problem in gaining public acceptance is the confusion between a tax and a fee. As the CRS report points out, “A road user charge that funded both highways and public transportation might arguably be seen more as a tax than a user fee.” It goes on to cite legal cases on the differences between the two. Over many decades, at both federal and state levels, gas taxes that began as pure user fees—paid only by highway users and spent only to benefit highway users—were gradually converted into all-purpose transportation taxes. The original idea of a highway trust fund was basically a promise to highway users that all the money they paid in highway use taxes would be spent for their direct benefit—users-pay/users-benefit. What we have ended up with is a very different model: highway users pay/everybody benefits. And that, I believe, is one reason why a large fraction of the population is so resistant to gas-tax increases.
Instead of replicating that built-in flaw as we design the gas tax’s replacement, we should consider a different way forward. What if people’s monthly highway bill was as transparent and straightforward as their mobile-phone bill, electric bill, water bill, and cable or broadband bill? With all those utilities, you are charged based on the services you use; the funds go directly to the provider of the service; and the money is used solely for the capital and operating costs of the infrastructure used. We don’t have major political battles over a mobile-phone rate increase because the system needs to add more cell towers or upgrade to 4G or 5G. Or the need to increase water rates because the pipes have to be replaced.
Changing the way we pay for our highways and bridges (by shifting from per-gallon to per-mile) offers a once-in-a-century opportunity to rethink how this vital infrastructure is managed, as well as how it is paid for. Unlike the predominant U.S. model of investor-owned utilities, what the 20th century gave us in highways is a set of state-owned enterprises, funded by taxes and governed politically. Most of Europe’s utilities were also state-owned enterprises prior to the 1980s, when Margaret Thatcher privatized electricity, natural gas, telecoms, water and wastewater, airports, and seaports—and much of the rest of Europe then followed suit (including the tolled motorways of France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain). De-politicization of those sectors led to increased and better-justified investment, better customer service, and in some cases, competition where there had only been monopoly.
Yes, I know—that would be a massive paradigm shift, probably far too much to be done all at once. So let me suggest a possible first step. We already have well-accepted technology and procedures in place to do per-mile charging on one portion of our highway system: limited-access Interstates and urban expressways. Converting those highways, state by state, from fuel taxes to state-of-the-art all-electronic tolling (AET) would be comparatively simple, since we already have two working organizational models in operation: public-sector toll agencies and long-term P3 toll concessions. We already do variable pricing using AET, without raising Big Brother privacy concerns. The capital markets know how to invest equity and debt (toll revenue bonds) to finance major improvement projects, such as replacing obsolete bridges or adding dedicated truck lanes We are also close to having 50-state electronic tolling interoperability—and this already exists for trucking, via Bestpass and PrePass.
The Interstates alone handle 25% of all vehicle miles of travel; including non-Interstate expressways and other limited-access facilities might bring the total to 30%. That would be a serious start on the transition from per-gallon to per-mile—and the user fees would be paid directly to the roadway providers, thereby de-politicizing the process, making it more like all the other utilities we use.
States could then work to develop simple, low-tech ways of replacing the fuel taxes used for other roadways, while being relieved of having to support the ongoing capital and operating expenses of the limited-access highways, now supported instead by per-mile tolling.
I’ve left out a lot of details in this brief sketch, but I’m happy to tell you that I’ve recently completed a book-length treatment on this new paradigm for highways. 21st Century Highways will be out next spring from the University of Chicago Press. I will keep you posted as we get closer to the publication date.
Last August, in Issue No. 154, I critiqued a study from the OECD’s International Transport Forum called “Shared Mobility: Innovation for Livable Cities.” It summarized a detailed simulation model of surface transportation in Lisbon, Portugal, in which all private motor vehicles and conventional buses were assumed to be banned and replaced by shared taxis (6-seat minivans) and taxi-buses (8-passenger and 16-passenger minibuses). They would all be centrally dispatched in response to user requests. The model’s results included large reductions in vehicle miles of travel (VMT) and CO2 emissions. Among my critiques was that shared-mobility does not provide the claimed “same level of comfort and convenience” as an individually owned vehicle and that the simulation covered only trips within the Lisbon city limits, not the much larger metro area.
Well, last month ITF released a successor report, “Transition to Shared Mobility,” which extends the modeling to the entire Lisbon Metro Area (3,000 sq. km versus only 85 sq. km in the city, and 2.8 million people rather than just 548,000). It should not be a surprise that, given all the same assumptions, the results are even “better” in terms of reductions in VMT and CO2. That follows directly from the fact that private car use and average trip lengths are significantly greater in the suburbs than in the city. Moreover, the report raves about much higher transit system use and transit’s improved economic viability—but what else could you expect if private motor vehicles are banned?
Although the simulation included what the authors refer to as “discretionary” trips—shopping, services, recreation, culture, family—all the report’s quantitative results about “access” refer solely to jobs. It’s hard to imagine that trips to the supermarket or the big box appliance store are faster and more convenient in a shared mini-van or a taxi-bus. Also ignored is the widespread U.S. practice of trip-chaining on the way to or from work; maybe the Portuguese don’t do this? Incidentally, average occupancy of shared taxis during peak periods is 3.0 and of taxi-buses is 4.8 (if 8-passenger) or 12.9 (if 16-seat). The design speed of the shared taxi is given as 15 km/hour (i.e., 9.3 mph). So door-to-door trip times, including an average wait of 10 minutes for “longer” trips plus the time to pick up and drop off the other occupants, cannot conceivably be anywhere close to door-to-door times in a single-occupant vehicle.
This follow-up report does acknowledge that 100% replacement of all car and bus trips “is interesting as a conversation starter around the potential for shared mobility, but it is not a blue-print for implementing such systems.” But it then outlines several step-by-step transition scenarios, in which, for example, all single-user taxi service is replaced by shared taxi and all existing bus service is replaced by taxi-buses. Two more-drastic scenarios reduce various categories of private car use, such as “replacing” trips where people have to pay for parking with mandated shared-taxi use and another that forbids private car use except in cases where the users have free parking at their destination. The report goes on to say, “To help shift from cars to shared modes in a real situation, public authorities must calibrate interventions, both from the side of disincentives for using private cars (by reducing parking supply, increasing price, or reducing maximum allowed duration) and from the side of quality of supply of the new shared modes.”
It will be interesting to see what happens when the first European city tries to implement any of these scenarios. And if you think nobody would dream of suggesting such things here, I doubt that very much.
East and Gulf coast port directors are happy to see that the much-larger new locks in the Panama Canal—in operation since last summer—are indeed changing the pattern of shipping from Asia to the east coast. Some larger ships are shifting from Pacific coast ports, and others are bringing larger ships to the east coast via the Panama Canal instead of the Suez Canal.
Meanwhile, larger new locks are still a great struggle on the U.S. inland waterway system. The Wall Street Journal ran a large page-3 story on the $2.7 billion project that is replacing the 85-year-old locks on the Monongahela River in Pennsylvania (called the Lower Mon Project). The project began in 1994, and was supposed to take 10 years. But according to the WSJ story, it has been scaled back to provide only one new lock instead of two—and will not be completed until 2023. That’s 29 years after the project began.
By contrast, the massive $5.25 billion Panama Canal new-locks project started in 2008 and finished in 2016—taking just eight years and finishing up at a cost of $5.6 billion, just 19% over budget. As Georgia Ports director Griff Lynch told the Journal of Commerce, “When you think about what they did in the period of time they did, it’s nothing short of amazing.” And he added, “We’ve been trying to build the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project since 1996, so Panama did something you can’t do in the U.S. under today’s restrictions and standards.”
To be sure, federal environmental review and other permitting requirements are likely more complex than Panama’s. But there’s another major reason why Panama was able to succeed so dramatically: tolls. Customers of both the Panama and Suez canals pay tolls to use those costly locks. That permits mega-projects like this to be financed up front, with the bonds being paid off over time, as the customers derive the benefits of the much better facilities.
The Suez Canal has reacted to the new Panama Canal locks by reducing its toll rates. But since the Panama Canal needs its toll revenues to pay off the bonds, it is not engaging in a price war with Suez. Rather, in anticipation of the latter’s price cuts, the Panama Canal instituted a loyalty program, giving frequent users earned discounts. It is also considering discount tolls on the backhauls of the largest ships that are at least 70% full on their incoming (from Asia) trips.
By contrast with this market-based approach, U.S. port and waterway projects continue to hope for favorable political decisions by Congress and the Corps of Engineers to obtain dribs and drabs of funding for needed dredging and lock-replacement projects. Since there are far more projects than available federal funding, the result is decades-long delays in projects. In the case of waterway improvements, the barge lines go all-out to lobby against any possibility of tolls to pay for replacing ancient locks, hoping against hope for large-scale windfalls from Congress. My question is: why do those who ship commodities via the waterways continue to put up with this nonsense?
Despite the claims of certain boosters, U.S. transit ridership continues to decline. The Eno Center for Transportation analyzed data from the American Public Transportation Association and found that between 2014 and 2016, ridership declined in all but seven very large urban areas. And these declines are occurring despite significant U.S. population increases of 4.5 million and job increases of 5 million.
The chief reason for decreasing ridership is the decline in transit service in many metro areas. Some of this is a result of rail system cutbacks. In Miami for example, Metrorail trimmed service by one hour on weekdays and three hours on weekends. Headways (the time between successive trains) on the Orange Line will increase from 15 minutes to 30 minutes. The change is especially jarring because Mayor Gimenez ran on a pledge to increase service, but the effect of these changes is the exact opposite. In our nation’s capital, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (WMATA) has also reduced service. The system closes on weekend nights at 1 AM instead of 3 AM and does not open until 8 AM on Sundays. Most significantly, headways have been increased on many lines. The Red line used to operate every 2 ½ minutes during rush hour on weekdays; today it operates every 4 minutes.
But while rail service cuts may get the media attention, most of the decline is due to decreased bus service. Between 2009 and 2014, bus miles of travel decreased 5.2%. In many cases bus headways increased; sometimes they doubled from 15 minutes to 30 minutes or from 30 minutes to 60 minutes. In other cases, bus routes have been replaced by rail lines. Often these rail lines provide worse (e.g., less-direct) service to transit riders, especially younger, low-income users who depend on transit to get to work. Dallas and Houston both built new light rail lines to replace existing bus lines. For several years, despite spending millions of dollars on new equipment, the new system (rail and bus) carried fewer passengers than the original system (bus only). Exacerbating the problem, the low rail ridership forced Dallas and Houston transit agencies into further cuts in bus service creating a transit death spiral of service cuts leading to lower ridership leading to service cuts leading to lower ridership, etc.
The headway reductions are problematic. The Mineta Transportation Institute found that when you control for variables such as gas prices and other transportation options, bus frequency is the number one predictor of bus ridership. Put simply, decreasing bus service substantially decreases ridership, even for buses that already had low ridership.
Fortunately, there are several steps that can be taken to cost-effectively improve transit service. Unfortunately, some of the changes require new thinking at transit agencies while others upset a political constituency. As a result, the pace of change is likely to be slow.
First, local policymakers and transit agencies need to take a hard look at their capital expansions. Politicians love ribbon cuttings, but as the data show, new rail capital investments are extremely expensive and haven’t led to significant increases in ridership. New bus routes are much cheaper. Further, with the advent of intelligent transportation systems technology and advances in traffic systems engineering, bus speeds can be increased on major (trunk) lines. Traffic signal priority alone can increase bus speeds by 20% or more.
Second, local leaders need to redesign bus networks. Some bus routes have not been changed in 20 years. Development activities and commuting patterns can change. Bus networks should be adjusted at least every five years. The reason for the reluctance to change routes is that existing customers often complain to local elected officials, putting the transit agency in a tough spot. Thankfully, some transit agencies have taken the risk. At very little cost, Houston Metro redesigned its bus network, eliminating some low-ridership routes and substantially increasing service on weekends. As a result, weekend ridership increased by almost 50%. While ridership has fallen back in the past few months due to external factors, redesigning the network in this manner does increase ridership.
Third, traditional transit agencies should consider forming partnerships with private transit and technology companies. One option is to have transit agencies provide service on high ridership lines (in central business districts and along trunk routes) while private bus services and technology companies provide fixed-route service in low-density suburbs. Such companies would also provide paratransit service for the disabled. Kansas City’s transit agency KCATA partnered with Bridj, a private bus company, for these services. While the partnership dissolved, the concept might work in many U.S. metro areas. Uber has contracts to provide paratransit service to a number of regions including Atlanta and Dallas. Such contracts should be expanded.
Finally, with a rapidly changing world, transit agencies need to evolve or risk becoming obsolete. The biggest opportunity is for transit agencies to shift their business model from being the operator of vehicles to being a provider of mobility services to customers. Automated vehicles are on the horizon; while they won’t reduce the need for bus service for at least 10 years, once AVs become widespread, change could come very quickly. Contracting out paratransit and partnering for some bus service is a start, but in the future mobility managers will need to do much more. They will oversee multiple transit providers each of which will operate different routes, and will help match passengers with automated Uber/Lyft vehicles. Those companies could potentially manage fleets and provide AVs on demand.
U.S. transit service can be improved. But this requires transit agencies to think about their future and have the political courage to start making changes today.
A recent headline in my local newspaper read, “Cars, Get Ready to Share the Lane: Sharrows Empower Bike Riders to Take Over the Road.” Despite several decades of doing transportation policy, I had never before heard of “sharrows.” The basic idea is that instead of painting a separate bike lane along the side of a road, the entire traffic lane becomes a shared lane, with special markings in the center encouraging the cyclists to ride down the middle, impeding motor vehicle travel. It’s all part of a nationwide “complete streets” movement aimed at putting bike riders on a more equal footing with motorists.
My first reaction was horror, thanks to discussions some years ago with a transportation engineer colleague that putting bikes together with faster and vastly heavier motor vehicles poses serious risks to cyclists. Consultant Larry Horist, who advised Chicago on streetscapes, wrote in response to the above article that “there are many places where bikes should not be allowed,” and that one of them is in the middle of a traffic lane.
Thanks to my traffic engineer friend, I located what appears to be the only empirical study that compares the performance of bike lanes, sharrows, and nothing, using a large data set from Chicago, where bicycle commuting has been on the uptrend. Nicholas Ferenchak and Wesley Marshall are civil engineering professors at the University of Colorado, Denver. Their large data set included 259 Chicago block groups that had sharrows installed, 292 that had bike lanes installed, and 1621 that had no bicycle infrastructure installed, between 2000 and 2010. They collected data on changes in bicycle use and in bicyclist injures in the “before” and “after” periods.
In terms of stimulating bicycle use, the sharrow was much less effective than adding a bike lane, and less effective even than doing nothing (in a city where bicycle commuting was on an uptrend). And in terms of reducing injuries to bike riders, once again the sharrow was less effective than a bike lane or doing nothing. After performing statistical tests, they found that on both outcome measures, the difference between doing nothing and adding a sharrow was statistically insignificant.
The authors’ literature review found only a single previous paper that examined data on sharrows’ safety performance. The 2013 paper by Harris, et al. found that while bike paths and bike lanes significantly decreased cyclist injury rates, sharrows increased that risk, though the sharrow results were not statistically significant. Numerous other papers assumed or found some evidence that sharrows increased bicycle usage, but did not attempt to measure safety impacts—but sharrows were far less costly for cities to implement, requiring only paint, rather than reconfiguring the whole streeet.
Authors Ferenchak and Marshall note in passing that sharrows have been added to the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, which I think was ill-considered, especially in light of their closing comment: “It is time that sharrows are exposed for what they really are: a cheap alternative that not only fails to solve a pressing safety problem, but actually makes the problem worse through a sense of false security.” Their paper, presented at the Transportation Research Board 2016 Annual Meeting, is “The Relative (In)Effectiveness of Bicycle Sharrows on Ridership and Safety Outcomes.”

Oregon Legislature Supports Value Pricing on Two Interstates. As part of a $5.3 billion transportation bill approved by both houses of the Legislature earlier this month, Oregon DOT will create a commission to decide how to make use of variable pricing on congested I-5 and I-205 in the Portland area. Once the commission decides on a specific plan, it must apply to the federal Value Pricing program for the needed permission. Options include implementing variable pricing on all lanes or adding variably priced express toll lanes to those Interstates. The revenues are intended to be used for diect congestion-relief investment, including widening I-5.
Texas SH 130 Exits Bankruptcy. The rural portion of Texas toll road SH 130, between the outskirts of Austin and the outskirts of San Antonio, has exited the bankruptcy it entered last year when toll revenue shortfalls made it impossible to service the P3 project’s debt. A multinational investment group—Strategic Value Partners—bought 51% of the SH 130 Concession Company, with the balance held by the debt providers. Goldman Sachs provided new financing of $260 million. Louis Berger Services will operate and maintain the toll road.
Texas to Expand Interoperability to More States. The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority in late June approved an agreement to pursue interoperability of TxTag transponders with toll roads in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas next year. Also under consideration is to have Texas to join the E-ZPass Group, which provides interoperable electronic tolling in 16 eastern and Midwestern states.
Competition for Amtrak Long-Distance Service. Politico reported (July 6th) that the Federal Railroad Administration is finalizing rules that will allow private passenger rail companies to compete with Amtrak on long-distance routes that have been perennial loss-makers for the government rail company. Under the 2015 FAST Act, third-party operators are allowed to run up to three such routes for four-year periods, if they can do this at a lower cost than Amtrak.
Truck Stops Group Lobbies to Prevent Commercialized Rest Areas. The White House 2018 budget proposal includes repealing the long-standing federal ban on commercial services being provided at rest areas along Interstate highways (like those that exist on virtually all long-distance toll roads). The trade group, NATSO, argues that this would be unfair to all its member companies that have built gas stations, fast-food places, and convenience stores, as well as truck stops, near Interstate off-ramps and on-ramps. Current law permits only vending machines at Interstate rest areas. Full-service plazas at rest areas would be far more convenient for motorists and truckers than having to exit the Interstate and get back on after finding the needed facilities.
DSRC Under Attack. An insightful piece by Roger Lanctot presents an array of arguments against the proposed federal mandate that all new motor vehicles be equipped with digital short-range communications (DSRC) capability, so the cars can communicate with other vehicles and with smart infrastructure. Lanctot cites numerous shortcomings in the highly-touted demonstrations under way in Macomb County, MI. Check out “DSRC: The Road to Ridiculous” online at www.strategyanalytics.com.
Maryland County Argues for Express Toll Lanes. The Montgomery County, MD (near Washington, DC) County Council voted 8 to 1 to approve a list of transportation priorities sent to the state DOT. Heading the list of Interstate projects is adding reversible express toll lanes to highly congested I-270 between Shady Grove Road and Frederick County. Rep. John Delaney (D, MD) has supported the call for adding express toll lanes in this corridor.
Australia’s Largest Container Port Privatized. In another example of the country’s ongoing “asset recycling” effort, the state of Victoria approved a 50-year lease of the Port of Melbourne for $7.36 billion. The winning bidder is a consortium consisting of the Queensland Investment Corporation, Global Infrastructure Partners, and two public pension funds: OMERS (Canada) and Future Fund (Australia). QIC also holds a 26.7% stake in the Port of Brisbane, and pension fund IFM holds an equal stake there, while also holding 35% of NSW Ports.
Working at Home Hits New Highs. Except for six major metro areas with traditional central business districts and rail transit, most other large metro areas now have more telecommuters than transit commuters. Data from the American Community Survey finds that telecommuting is especially high in metro areas with tech-related industries, such as Austin, Denver, Raleigh-Durham, San Diego, and Seattle. In San Jose, 4.6% work from home, versus 3.4% who use transit. There’s a lot more in Joel Kotkin’s June 28th piece, “Want to Be Green? Forget Mass Transit. Critique of Economic Impact Studies. We’ve all read studies claiming to demonstrate large economic impacts of a new bridge, sports stadium, or solar power project. The fallacy in such studies is that they never take into account the opportunity cost of using the dollars for this project rather than some other project that would produce greater benefits. The project only makes economic sense if the benefits exceed the costs, and if that B/C ratio is higher than that of alternative investments of the same dollars. An excellent short paper explaining these points was posted this spring by the John Locke Foundation. “In mid-June of this year, our legislature approved a $183 billion budget that included $2.8 billion to be raised from the new ‘gas tax’ of an additional 12 cents per gallon . . . . This is, we are told, desperately needed to get our transportation infrastructure out of critical care where it has been languishing for several years. . . . State Senator Scott Wilk (R) and State Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez (R), both opposed to the gas tax as a matter of fiscal responsibility, subsequent to passage stated that 30% of the new gas tax revenues was being diverted to uses such as building parks and bike lanes, job training for felons, turtle bridges, etc.—i.e., diverted from specific transportation remediation purposes. . . . In contract law, the parties to an agreement are held to an implied covenant of good faith. . . . Of course, a legislative bill is technically not a contract (between the government and the people), but one must consider the manner in which the legislators in favor of a particular bill obtained the ‘consent’ of the people in their district. Proclaiming in stentorian terms the desperate need for repairing potholes in 175,000 miles of California’s roads and highways, repairing crumbling bridges, and so on—without expressly mentioning that the funds may also be used for other administration pet projects—could not that omission be deemed a ‘diverting’?”
“[It’s] way too early [for federal regulation of autonomous vehicles]. We are still at the very beginning. If the Benz patent on Jan. 19, 1886 is the beginning of the transition from the buggy whip to the steering wheel, little got off the ground until 22 years later when Henry Ford unveiled his Model T on Oct. 1, 1908. If we take the DARPA Challenge as equivalent to the Benz patent, and we don’t really have a Henry Ford in sight, then we are probably at “1898” in the evolution from the steering wheel to the chauffeured driverless “Downton Abbey” mobility-on-demand. Can you imagine Congress in 1898 regulating the car? Henry wouldn’t have had a chance. So, today, please No! Way too early. Give the technology a chance before you go in there and screw it up.”
“[Mayor] de Blasio’s response [to a 9-year-old pedestrian’s death] was to slow the city’s traffic still further, lowering speed limits from 30 to 25 miles an hour, turning some avenues from four lanes to two, and timing the change of traffic lights so as to prevent drivers from building up speed. The result is that it now takes more than twice as long to get from uptown to midtown by cab. New York jumped from the world’s eighth-most-congested city to its third last year, according to traffic-analyst firm Inrix. The average commuter spent the equivalent of two entire work weeks in traffic jams, and the city overall lost $16.9 billion in time, fuel, and so on.”

The expansion of Cosmic Christ Consciousness sweet ones, taking you deeper into the next level of your Soulâs blossoming and Light, is greatly amplified through the Stargate of the Goddess â the Stargate of Sirius, which commences July 23rd with the Rise of Sirius. This is the day when Sirius rises on your horizon just before the Sun. The Rise of Sirius begins a 55-day cycle, from July 23 to September 15, when the Sirian Stargate is opened and activated more widely than at other times; the portal through which the energy of the Goddess enters, aligning you to the Galactic Center and Overlighted by the Sirian Archangelic Leagues of Light and the many Illumined Beings of Light from On High. These Cosmic Crystalline Codes of Light will be experienced through the Unity Grid of Divine Love, upgrading the New Earth Templates of Solar Crystalline Consciousness, and allow you to more gently and graciously walk the Path of Divine Love.
In preparation for this momentous occasion into the next level of your Soulâs blossoming, magnificence and Light, you are invited into the Temple of Truthsweet ones. The Temple of Truth is brought into being through the energy of the first ray of will and power, and the overlay of Splendor over Severity (Hod over Geburah) on Jacobâs Ladder, and the Overlighting of Archangels Chamuel, Michael, Raphael, the Order of Melchizedek and the Sirian Archangelic League of Light.
The first ray of will and power, is primarily concerned with owning your personal power, and aligning your will with the Divine Will of God. This first ray, along with the second ray of Love/Wisdom and the third ray of Divine Intelligence, also called the threefold flame of Power, Love and Wisdom, imbues all the rays with aspects of their Divine qualities, so we are all working with these ray qualities to some degree. Many people still choosing the victim/persecutor consciousness are integrating the qualities to this first ray, and the vibrant energy associated with this ray, which requires you to detach yourself from control and domination issues, and become the empowered âwarriorâ of Divine Will. In so doing, you will truly understand what it is to wield power, rather than submit to it, as well as knowing when to step forward in dynamic right action and when to step back in Love and Wisdom.
To hold the Sword of Holy Truth with empowerment and justice sweet ones, you enter the Temple of Truth to release judgment and blame through forgiveness and Love. As you look through your Master eyes at all of Life around you as this loving sacred Flame of Light, with discernment, patience, and emotional detachment, only then is Truth revealed. To initially experience Truth sweet ones, requires compassion and understanding as to the suffering of others and the strength to stand fearlessly as a warrior of Light. All is revealed beyond the ring-passeth-nots as the veils of illusion lift, and the timelines of Self Mastery activate in deeper levels of wisdom, Love and empowerment. Perhaps the most significant aspect to these incoming Galactic frequencies through the Stargate of the Goddess is the ability to release the victim/persecutor consciousness and completely trust and surrender to the Divine, knowing that the highest outcome will always prevail as you draw to you your multidimensional Selves and future Self through your Beloved I Am Presence.
We start this transmission connecting to the Sirian Archangelic League of the Light as they bring through what they call the Sirian Stargate of the Heart. As you experience these ray frequencies within the Temple of Truth sweet ones, you see that you are dressed in this beautiful red ceremonial robe, with the symbol of the Flower of Life and the six-pointed star on the back of the robe, bringing a focus to the teachings of the Eye of Horus, the teachings of the Order of Melchizedek. And upon your left breast three flames appear; the Diamond Flame of Melchizedek Consciousness, the Silver-Gold Flame of Sirian Consciousness and Highest Potentials, and the Red Flame of Truth and Empowerment. At the center of these flames is the symbol of a pentagram.
Good sweet ones. As you look around you now, you see that you are in this Pentagonal shaped Red and Pink Ice Temple. The walls, floor and ceiling are made from this red and pink ice, representing Truth, Empowerment and Divine Love. There are high glass windows with the symbol of the Star of Melchizedek upon these windows, the symbol of the six pointed star, and as the sun reflects through these windows, the Temple is lit in these vibrant hues of red and diamond, silver and gold. You now notice two pillars to each side of you, one black and one white, representing the masculine and feminine aspects of polarity balance, and now you see between these pillars an altar. Centered on the altar is a red bowl carved from ruby, and above it hovers a silver-gold flame, and within the flame, sweet ones, a Sword of Holy Truth, embedded with five red rubies, from which a great feeling of power radiates out. The altar is surrounded by beautiful wreaths of ruby red roses.
Archangel Michael now comes forward and leads you to this central altar. He lets you know that the Sword of Holy Truth is to be given you as a courageous warrior of Light, and that each of the five red rubies represents a Golden Age Timeline of Light, taking you into the Sirian Temple of the Goddess, the Lemurian Temple of Dreaming, the Atlantean Diamond Crystal Temple, the Egyptian Temple of Light and Darkness, and the first red ruby crystal represents the Temple of Truth.

As you anchor and hold the incoming high frequency templatings, numerologies and sacred geometries within your physical bodies sweet ones, you are experiencing many multidimensional realities converging in this Now, additionally activated through the Trinity Lordsâ Shield and the atomic seeds of God Consciousness, the bio-energetic matrix circuitry of the Crystalline Life-Code Seed Atoms and your Beloved I Am Presence. As an amplified frequency of the three-fold Flame of Power, Love and Wisdom, the Crystalline Life-Code Seed Atoms are the highest expression of your Divinity, bringing in the Crystalline Consciousness of all dimensions of Light and assisting in the creation of your Adam Kadmon Body of Light, your I Am Avatar Body of Light and the original Divine Blue-Print of your God Selves.

I experience now the activation of Metatron's Cube within this diamond sphere,
these 13 spheres of God's Infinite Perfection.
And now I see a beautiful Golden Flower of Life activate,
and now the Fruit of Life within Metatron's Cube,
and now, the Tree of Life.
I now see before me the Trinity Lords of Light,
Lord Michael, Lord Metatron and Lord Melchizedek.
The Trinity Lords of Light now anchor and activate their Shield of Light as a spinning disc through my Soul Star Chakra,
anchoring now the Crystalline Life-Code Seed Atoms,
and the highest expression of my Divinity, Innocence and Purity.
This Shield of Light now moves into the crown chakra,
spinning in a clockwise and then counter-clockwise direction,
and now through each one of my chakras,
and into my Earth Star Chakra.
From here, the Trinity Lordâs Shield of Light activates from my base chakra back to my Soul Star Chakra.
As my chakras now align in one unified column of Light,
I experience a deepening sense of the merging Christed Timelines of Self Mastery,
and myself as a Melchizedek Initiate of Light.
The Trinity Lordâs Shield of Light now activates around the diamond sphere 54 feet in diameter around me,
this beautiful 12-pointed star with two infinity symbols embedded upon the star,
one horizontal and one vertical,
as I am taken deeper into alignment with the Divine Blueprints of Creation,
and my I Am Avatar Blueprint of Light.
I now bring a focus to the Temple of Contemplation,
as I am surrounded in the Violet Flame of Transmutation,
through the seventh ray of ceremonial magic.
Within this Violet Flame now appears a beautiful White Flame,
anchoring now within my Christed Heart,
the Flame of Life, representing the sphere of Malkuth, the Kingdom.
Overlighted by Lord Melchizedek, the Order of Melchizedek, and Archangel Sandalphon and his Legions of Light, I now state:
I accept the invitation to the Temple of Contemplation as an initiate of Light,
I am ready to embrace each challenge I experience as an initiation of Light.
I am ready to step into the next level of my Soulâs magnificence, blossoming and Light.
I now see of sense my Melchizedek Master Guide to the right of me,
And now, Archangel Sandalphon to the left of me.
I see a portal of Light activating around my Shield of Light,
taking me now into the higher dimensional fields of Light,
and now, into the Temple of Contemplationwithin the kingdoms of Light within Orion.
I enter the Temple of Contemplation, facing west initially,
As I now hear the most beautiful celestial music,
and now, the chants of âAdonai Malekh, the Lord who is King and the Lord made manifest in nature.

I notice the chessboard floor,
bringing to mind the Game of Life.
I now see a White Pillar of Fire to the right of me,
and a Black Pillar of Water to the left of me,
representing the male and female polarities,
and my ability to experience a renewed re-balancing between my Divine Masculine and Feminine Spirits.
As I look around me I see many stained glass windows,
with the symbol of the Flower of Life,
and within this, the six-pointed star,
the Star of Melchizedek.
I now bring my gaze to the central altar,
as I notice upon the white linen cloth,
a beautiful arrangements of lilies and white candles,
and in the center of the altar,
a crystal bowl with a White Flame burning within this,
and within the White Flame,
the symbol of the cross with equal arms.
I notice too that I am wearing a white ceremonial robe,
with the symbol of the Flower of Life and the six-pointed star on the back of the robe,
and now at my left breast upon my robe,
three flames appear;
the Diamond Flame of Melchizedek Consciousness,
the Violet Flame of Transmutation,
and the White Flame of Inner Peace and Serenity,
enfolding the symbol of the cross with equal arms.
Archangel Sandalphon now lifts his flaming sword into the air,
and draws a magical circle.
And now, I see thousands of initiates sitting in this magical circle,
with their arms outstretched and their hands held up in front of them,
surrounding Mother Earth and all her Life in the Violet Flame of Transmutation
and the White Flame of Purity, Peace and Serenity.
As I join this magical circle of Melchizedek Initiates,
I now recite:
Beloved Mother/Father God, and all Legions of Light from On High,
please amplify the Violet Flame of Transmutation,
blazing around my body and energy field,
and around the body and energy field of Mother Earth and all her sacred Life,
so that I may release from my body and energy field all misaligned energies, addictions, fears, false beliefs and judgments that no longer need to be experienced for myself and all Life on this sacred earth.
Fill me with your Love, abundance, compassion, wisdom and understanding
as collectively we walk the path of Divine Love,

SCB European Section Scientists Express Concern Over Proposed Logging Expansion in Białowieża Forest
The Policy Committee of the SCB European Section (SCB-ES) wrote a letter to the Polish Prime Minister, Polish President, European Commissioner, UNESCO and Council of Europe expressing concern about the Polish Government's plans to modify the existing 2012-2021 Forest Management Plan for Białowieża Forest. In the letter, Dr. Nuria Selva and SCB-ES colleagues highlight that the forestry practices proposed in an amended Annex set out by the Polish Government, such as salvage logging as a response to bark beetle outbreaks, break the limits of timber extraction established in the Forest Management Plan 2012-2021, and are not only unnecessary for the protection of the Białowieża Forest, but are counterproductive. Efforts by Selva and Polish scientists were highlighted in an article in Nature.
Białowieża Forest is threatened by proposed changes to the Polish Government’s Forest Management Plan, which would allow for increased timber harvest. The Society for Conservation Biology’s European Section (SCB-ES) has reacted to this proposed change by sending a letter to the Polish Ministry of Environment. SCB-ES has followed the case of Białowieża Forest for a decade now and continues supporting the protection of old-growth forest stands in the forest and elsewhere in Europe. These European activities form part of the Society for Conservation Biology's Global Forest Initiative.
Białowieza Forest – values and protection
Białowieza Forest (~1600 km2, near the Polish-Belarusian borderland) is the last remaining large fragment of primeval deciduous forest in Europe. Different forest types and high structural diversity result in an exceptional biodiversity. More than 17,000 plant and animal species have been recorded in Białowieza Forest. The forest supports the largest population of European bison as well as large populations of large carnivores such as the wolf and lynx. Bird communities are characterized by rare species of woodpeckers, owls and hole-nesting songbirds that depend on old growth and standing dead trees. The forest is a unique biodiversity hotspot in Europe, and a fascinating source of scientific knowledge, particularly for understanding ecological processes. Białowieza represents a much needed ecological blue-print for the restoration of forests in Europe as well as elsewhere in the world.
The protection of Białowieza Forest dates back to the 14th century. Białowieza National Park (50 km2) was established in 1921, and was included in the list of World Biosphere Reserves in 1977, as well as listed as an UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. In 1996, the area of the National Park was doubled to its current size of 105 km2. In 2003, ~122 km2 were declared as Nature Reserves within Białowieza. The rest of Białowieza Forest, not within protected areas, is open to commercial timber extraction and hunting. Many old-growth forest stands are still unprotected within Białowieza, and the silvicultural practices used in non-protected areas, do not maintain ecological processes. In 2014, the UNESCO World Heritage was extended to include the entire Polish side of Białowieza Forest.
For more than 20 years, scientists and conservation experts have recommended the protection of all remaining non-protected areas of Białowieza Forest, suggesting to protect remaining areas as National Park (currently ~17% of Białowieza Forest is protected as National Park). Despite several attempts made by the Polish Ministry of the Environment, this has not been possible due to limitations in the existing legal framework and a lack of support from municipal councils. Following this, 250,000 Polish citizens challenged the existing legislation and the right to veto the creation of national parks. The Polish government did not put this particular amendment to vote and after five years the citizen initiative eventually expired.
Forest Management Plan 2012-2021- annexing
To meet recommendations made by the Council of Europe to revise existing forestry policy and practices, a number of regulations were introduced while preparing the new Forest Management Plan for the managed forests in Białowieza Forest and a management plan for Natura 2000 sites. In 2012, the Polish Minister of the Environment approved the Forest Management Plan for three Forest Districts of Białowieza Forest. The approved management plans limited timber extraction, on average, to 48,500 m3/year for the next 10 years (compared to 150,000 m3/year in previous decades) and ensured the protection of 100-year old forest stands. This was broadly recognized as a sensible step forward in meeting all stakeholder’s expectations, because it supported local needs for logging timber while safeguarding ecological processes in Białowieza Forest.
The proposed actions have not been adopted by local managers, and a recent increase in timber harvesting, formally justified by the need to curb bark beetle outbreak, greatly exceeds the limits set forth in the Forest Management Plan. Further, current timber harvesting levels constitute a serious threat to the maintenance of a 10-year limit in timber harvesting set by the Forest Management Plan. Environmental non-government organizations (NGOs) have expressed concerns that one of the Forest Districts have already reached the harvesting limit set out in the Forest Management Plan, and have suggested that the district should abandon timber harvesting for the next 6 years.
The significant increase in the average annual limits of timber harvesting within Białowieza Forest Districts have resulted in a proposal to update (through annexation) the Forest Management Plan 2012-2021 for the Forest District that has already met its harvesting limit. The proposed annex considers the significant increase in logging, removal of dead wood and does not guarantee the protection of forest stands older than 100 years. In supporting the proposed annex of the Forest Management Plan, forestry authorities argue that ‘active management’ by harvesting is needed to protect the forest from bark beetle outbreaks and fire risk.
Scientists’ and environmental NGO’s perspectives
The bark beetle outbreaks occurring in Białowieza Forest are driven by multiple factors, including spring weather conditions, drought, the spatial configuration of spruce stands (including strictly protected stands where salvage logging is forbidden), and the occurrence of fires in Białowieza Forest. There is a coevolution of spruce trees and bark beetles that results in a cycle. This spruce-bark beetle cycle begins with a rise and peak in bark beetle numbers; the rise in bark beetle numbers is followed by the death of adult spruces in some patches. The cycle ends with a high regeneration of young spruces. Bark beetles are forest engineers, shaping the long-term dynamics and structure of the forest. Many species, like the three toed-woodpecker, depend on the bark beetles as a food source.
From an ecosystem perspective, the Białowieza Forest ecosystem needs to be viewed as more than just adult trees; young trees are also important and a part of the ever changing ecological processes within the forest. Treating the bark beetle as a pest is not justified in the context of the protection of biological diversity and ecological processes within the broader context of managing all components of Białowieza Forest. In addition, controlling the current bark beetle outbreak is not possible without infringement of the European Union Habitats Directive.
On 18 November 2015, State Council for Nature Conservation in Poland passed an official statement against the planned increase in forestry activities. This statement was followed by similar statements from the Committee for Nature Conservation of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Scientific Council of Białowieza National Park. The proposed annexation of the Forest Management Plan will be an infringement of Polish and EU environmental law and the UNESCO criteria.

The Jet bearing in 1 and 3 look the same but the one in two is longer and is the only one that can be screwed up to be flush with the bridge of the carburation.
The suction chamber assy in carb 1 has a fixed needle whilst 2 and 3 have spring loaded..
I closed the jet adjustment on all carbs, opened them by 7 flats to find as soon as I give any choke, petrol is running out of air intake of carb 1

Policy NC2: Commonhead
a. Land at Commonhead as defined on the Proposals Map, is allocated for a mixed-use development.
b. The development at Commonhead shall provide:Â· a total of 890 dwellings at an average density of 30 dwellings per hectare
Â· affordable homes in accordance with Policy HA2;
Â· 15 hectares of employment land within use-class B1 and/or B2
Â· a local centre of a maximum of 1000m2 retail floorspace ;
Â· a primary school (or 1 form-of-entry) incorporating community facilities;
Â· contributions towards the delivery of 1 form of entry secondary school places off-site;
Â· temporary accommodation to manage the demographic peak at primary, and contributions as such at secondary schools;
Â· Green Infrastructure in accordance with Policy EN1 and which connects to the urban area and wider countryside ;
Â· sport, leisure and community facilities in accordance with Policy CM2;
Â· high quality public realm;
Â· a community wide approach to renewable energy; and
Â· 5.5 hectares of land safeguarded for future expansion of the Great Western Hospital, incorporating provision for emergency services if required.
c. Development at Commonhead shall provide sustainable transport links that integrate with Swindon including:
Â· public transport links to Swindon town centre;
Â· walking and cycle links to Swindonâs existing communities, Coate Water Country Park and Great Western Hospital; and
Â· access to the site from Marlborough Road.
d. Development at Commonhead shall protect, enhance and integrate with existing environmental assets including:Â· Coate Water Country Park and Day House Copse;
Â· views to and from the North Wessex Downs AONB and Coate Water Country Park;
Â· protection of the existing historic environment, including the setting of listed buildings and on-site archaeological features
Â· habitat connectivity and enhanced biodiversity
e. The area between Coate Water and the new development will be protected from development, and the function of Day House Lane as a green corridor will be safeguarded.
f. The route for the Wilts & Berks Canal as set out on the Proposals Map will be safeguarded and protected from development.
5.35 The Adopted Swindon Borough Local Plan 2011 contained an allocation for a mixed-use urban extension incorporating a university campus on land at Commonhead. The scale of residential development associated with the development was required to enable the development of the university and employment land. The rationale behind this allocation related to a specific campus model, which can no longer be implemented. The residential element of the allocation (without the presence of a university campus) and the economic and social benefits associated with it was re-assessed through the Small Scale Urban Extensions Study. Consequently Commonhead is now re-allocated for a reduced scale of development.
5.36 In April 2012, following an Appeal in December 2011 outline permission was granted for 890 dwellings at Commonhead with employment land and land safeguarded for future expansion of the Great Western Hospital. It is considered necessary to maintain a policy in the Local Plan to guide reserved matter applications or in the event of a revised outline planning application.
5.37 The Swindon and Marlborough NHS Trust and Great Western Hospital have identified that there is a need for land adjacent to the hospital to be safeguarded to accommodate future growth needs.
5.38 Given its status, there is a requirement to protect the Day House Copse County Wildlife Site. It is important that the setting and role of Coate Water County Park is protected over the long-term and therefore the land between it and the Commonhead allocation is safeguarded from development. This area may also aid the local interpretation of the literacy [sic] associations of the area.
5.39 Commonhead will be a sustainable community in terms of design, transport, construction, energy and waste management in accordance with other policies in this Local Plan.

|Response to Anand Teltumbde: To the Self-proclaimed Teachers and Preachers|
Anand Teltumbde has announced his judgement about us (http://sanhati.com/articles/6366/). He has called us âself-obsessed Marxistsâ with âfrozen mindâ. What can we say? As he himself admits, his stay was of a few hours and in that short time span he was able to evaluate us conclusively and then declare his judgement. However, during that same short stay, we too, were able to make some impressions about Mr. Teltumbde. We shall start with some examples and then we shall proceed to a parawise reply of Mr. Teltumbdeâs article.
Of Self-obsession and Similar Diseasesâ¦
1. In his first statement during the Chandigarh seminar, Mr. Teltumbde spoke for almost 1 hour. In that long speech, he mentioned his own name at least 3 or 4 times. He began with claiming, âAmbedkarites say that Anand Teltumbde is a Marxist and Marxists say that Anand Teltumbde is an Ambedkariteâ! At one point, he says, âI donât like people who immediately agree with meâ; at another, âI saw a problem of mathematics pertaining to surplus solved by Marx using algebra, but I found that it was a problem of differential equation and then I thought why Marx has solved it using algebraâ¦then I solved it using differential equation and sent it to an international journal and that was my first article (giggles) published in an international journalâ¦many years later when I was in IIT I found that a Japanese scientist used my method in his research.â Again, âI became a Marxist at the age of 7 and I donât think anyone present here became a Marxist at that age.â I can give several such examples. However, above examples suffice to show what is the real meaning of self-obsession. I think, Mr. Teltumbde is perfectly honest when he says that he curses himself for having gone to Chandigarh. However, the reasons that he is giving for this ostensible self-bashing, do not seem convincing to us. We have a different explanation for this self-bashing, to which we will come later. For this moment, we would like to argue that Mr. Teltumbde should tell what does he mean by âself-obsessionâ. If he is going by the dictionary meaning, then definitely he needs to ponder over his own attitude.
He claims that we were not open to free and frank discussions and were not encouraging participation from outsiders to enrich our approach paper. However, he does not give any reason for this particular charge. For example, had we not been open to free and frank discussions on our approach paper, we would not have brought Mr. Teltumbde from Jalandhar (he had already said that if we want him to participate in the seminar even for a few hours, we will have to bring him from Jalandhar to Chandigarh and then drive him back to Jalandhar, the same day, in the evening) and then driven him back to Jalandhar. In our statement too, we said that we are completely open to listen to him and learn from him. We had (and still have) very high respect for him. In his stay of a few hours, he spoke for at least one and a half hour and we listened without any interruption and in the end too we offered him to stay and speak more. Had we not been open to debate and discussion on everything, we would not have gone to that extent to ensure his participation in our seminar. However, we must our high expectations about him crumbled like a cookie during his first statement; we got to hear many things to which we could not find ourselves in agreement, and so we also presented our criticism. However, I guess, Mr. Teltumbde is not used to criticism and he had problems taking this criticism. He did not say a word of disagreement in his second statement and everything that he said was to express his agreement with what had been argued by myself and Sukhvinder and also with what was written in our approach paper. I completely disagree with this charge of Mr. Teltumbde that we were obsessed with being proven correct. After his second statement also, he did not utter a single word of reservation about the way in which the seminar was being conducted. In fact, we (Mr. Teltumbde and myself) in person exchanged our phone numbers and he agreed to come to Delhi for a longer discussion. However, Mr. Teltumbde is completely silent about this in his article. We are surprised.
Parawise reply to Mr. Teltumbdeâs article
We have already responded to the first paragraph above. So I will start with the second paragraph of his article.
2. Anand Teltumbde charges us of mischief in throwing the âraw records of the seminar open for public discussionâ. He believes that public is not at the same stage of understanding as that of the delegates of the seminar (so they cannot participate in the discussion!). This is a ridiculous line of argument. All over the world, the statements of participants in seminars organized by revolutionary groups or even academic institutions are recorded and put online. There is nothing ârawâ about it. Had we edited the videos of seminar before putting them online, we would have faced the charge of fabrication of statements. Moreover, why Mr. Teltumbde is afraid of the âcommonâ public? I do not think that common public is not in a position to listen to and understand what Mr. Teltumbde and other speakers said during the debate. We would urge Mr. Teltumbde to see the video again and tell us, what the ignorant âcommonâ public would not understand. And how does this show that we do not understand the reality of caste? I mean, how does providing access to seminar debates to public is linked with our inability to understand caste? That is why, we said in the beginning that this is a ridiculous line of argument that does not lead us anywhere. We believe that not only providing common and general access to seminar debates by us, but the very participation of Mr Teltumbde in the seminar was traumatic for him, and that too, not for the reasons that he is mentioning, because he cannot support even a single charge against us with facts and details. So we would urge him to rethink his line of argument.
3. In the third para, first Mr. Teltumbde again puts the responsibility of âleakingâ of his statement to the media on us and asks âcan he (Abhinav) be absolved of this responsibility?â We would urge Mr. Teltumbde to learn to take the responsibility for whatever he says. He himself admits that he did say and in fact, he actually believes that all of Ambedkarâs experiments ended in a failure. Then what is the problem if a Hindi newspaper quotes it? And how does we become responsible for it? In all seminars, media is invited. It was not a closed door discussion of a Party and Mr. Teltumbde knew it. Once he had said what he said, he should not shy away from taking the responsibility rather than passing it on to somebody else. Secondly, Mr. Teltumbde puts forwards a plea to understand the context in which he âstood and spokeâ there so that one can understand what he did in his second statement. However, we would urge him to make us understand that context. In his long speech, there was nothing to be deciphered or deconstructed. He said in the beginning of his speech that he found difficulty in reading the approach paper as it was in Hindi, but he managed to read the entire paper. He said that the paper was written with a brahmanical mindset and it smacks of casteism. Now he is saying that there was âonly a thin line that differentiated it from casteist and brahmanist approachesâ. Now, tell us Mr. Teltumbde, isnât that a volte-face? Moreover, in his first statement, Mr. Teltumbde said that we are dogmatist Marxist. But in his second statement he said, âyou said that Marxism is not a dogma, I also say that, so be it.â Isnât that a volte-face, Mr. Teltumbde? Mr. Teltumbde said that we are trashing Ambedkar and Phule. We responded that we are not trashing them and we already acknowledged their contribution in the approach paper as well as our statements. However, that does not and should not stop us from presenting a critique of the philosophy, politics and economics of Ambedkar. There is no place of apologetics in the arena of criticism. We must call a spade a spade. To this, Mr. Teltumbde agreed and said that he too does not agree with Ambedkarâs politics and philosophy. However, in his first statement he claimed that many people do not know that Ambedkar followed the thinking of John Dewey, who was a progressive pragmatism; he argued further that Deweyan method is very akin to scientific method which tests every hypothesis (or set of postulates) on the basis of experimentation and then constructs a more advanced hypothesis (or set of postulates). He says that though he does not believe entirely in Deweyan method but it is very much akin to natural science. Then Mr. Teltumbde said that he comes from natural science background not social sciences where theories can be constructed. His statement is a de facto justification, or at least admiration for the pragmatism and instrumentalism of John Dewey. I criticized this approach of Mr. Teltumbde and argued that the Deweyan method claims to be scientific, but it is not. Because even science needs an a priori approach and world view. Then we presented a detailed critique of Deweyan method of Ambedkar. Mr. Teltumbde was nowhere critical of Deweyan method. Anyone who listens Mr. Teltumbde can understand that he is in fact admiring the Deweyan skepticism for all theory and its fetish for methodology, which is always âself-correctiveâ. In his second statement, Mr. Teltumbde withdrew his admiration of Deweyan pragmatism and agreed that he was one of the major pillars of American liberalism. Now, Mr. Teltumbde is saying that he only concentrated on one paragraph of the approach paper which allegedly distorted his views. Now, isnât that a volte-face, Mr. Teltumbde?
4., 5., 6., and 7. In these four paragraphs, Mr. Teltumbde embarks upon the task of exposing our ignorance! Let us see how. He quotes our paper to show that we have put the charge of amalgamating Marxism with Ambedkarism on him, which in fact is baseless, because he has never used the word âsamanvayaâ (amalgamation). Mr. Teltumbde is not being fair here because since he has seen the video again (as is apparant from this article of Mr. Teltumbde), we had already responded to this argument of Mr. Teltumbde in the seminar itself. I said in my first statement that it does not really matter what you call yourself. The mechanism of naming things is always external to the things that we are talking about. It will always be the people in general who will give you names, not you yourself. I argued in my first statement that when you say that Ambedkarâs âAnnihilation of Casteâ is to caste India what Communist Manifesto was for the working class, then you are giving a value judgement. Mr. Teltumbde said that he was using the term âManifestoâ here as a generic term and he did not mean to equate âAnnihilation of Casteâ with âCommunist Manifestoâ. However, I responded in my statement that even if you were using the term âManifestoâ in a generic way, this metaphor was wrong and obviously had ulterior motives. Because if you were using it as a generic term, you could have given the example of any other manifesto like âRights of Manâ, or âDeclaration of Rights of Womenâ, etc. But you chose âCommunist Manifestoâ! I argued that this whole metaphorization is value-loaded and whoever reads this statement of Mr. Teltumbde in the entire context knows that Mr. Teltumbde is not using the term âManifestoâ in a generic way, rather, he is equating the importance of âAnnihilation of Casteâ and âCommunist Manifestoâ, to which we, I think rightly, objected. Mr. Teltumbdeâs defence (that he used âManifestoâ as a generic term) was a really lame excuse. That is why Mr. Teltumbde did not utter a single word about our criticism of this analogy in his second statement.
Besides, Mr. Teltumbde accuses us of equating the division of castes to other divisions along the order of places in the production system (such as division between mental and manual labour, skilled and unskilled, etc and British and Irish workers, black and white workers). However, if you read the lines in the approach paper, we simply argued that everywhere the division of labour engenders some kind of division of labourers and Ambedkar was wrong in claiming that caste is not a division of labour but a division of labourers. Recent historiaography and evidences has now demonstrated beyond doubt that varna/caste system (a term preferred by Suvira Jaiswal, rather than simply using varna system or caste system) has its origins in the labour division which got ritualistically ossified and became a rigid division of labourers. In other places, the division of labour did engender a division of labourers but since elsewhere this division of labour did not get ritualistically ossified, it did not engender a rigid division of labourers based on birth. So the division of labourers in the case of Black/white, British/Irish is not rigid like the caste system. We have clarified this point while dealing with historiography of caste in the Approach Paper, as well as in the separate paper on the Historiography of Caste presented during the Seminar by me. But, Mr. Teltumbde has quoted us out of context to prove his point, a charge that, to our surprise, he puts on us! Mr. Teltumbde again accuses us of trashing all non-Marxist currents in the caste movements. However, we have clarified in the paper as well as in the statements that we had put forward in the seminar that it is not the question of trashing or completely adopting something. The real question is what can be learnt from Ambedkar and other currents in the caste movement and what should be criticized. Mr. Teltumbde, like always, has circumvented this real question. We have argued in our paper that the contribution of Ambedkar in establishing the Dalit identity and the sense of dignity should be acknowledged. However, we cannot adopt anything from his program of dalit emancipation, neither political program nor social or economic programs. And Mr. Teltumbde agrees on this point. So we end up wondering, what does he really object to! Because we have always particularized what we are criticizing, in all the papers that we presented in the seminar. Instead of putting a counter-critique on each and every point, Mr. Teltumbde has taken the convenient way of putting a vague charge on us, that is, we are in a rejectionist mode as regards the other currents in the caste movements. We say again and again that we are not rejecting, we are trying to establish a critical relation with everything, that is, we are trying to ascertain what can we learn from Ambedkar and what must be criticized in Ambedkar. Instead of arguing particularly about things, Mr. Teltumbde conducts a summary trial and announces his judgement on us. Now, is that an attitude of open and free debate and discussion, Mr. Teltumbde?
8. In the eighth para, Mr. Teltumbde raises the question of comparison of the âCommunist Manifestoâ and âAnnihilation of Castesâ about which we have already explained our position. However, he says an interesting thing to which we would like to draw your attention. He says that he is opposed to âhierarchize ideologiesâ which according to him is a âbrahmanical tendencyâ. So what do we have here? According to Mr. Teltumbde ideologies or philosophies should not be hierarchized; in other words, they should be put at par! First of all, we were not hierarchizing theories. He can not produce a single sentence from the approach paper or the statements that we had presented which hierarchizes philosophies. What we presented was a critique of Ambedkarâs politics and philosophy from a Marxist standpoint. Mr. Teltumbde is at his Deweyan pragmatist best here, as he can imagine only two positions: one, of hierarchizing philosophies and two, of putting them at par, or not hierarchizing them. So where does Mr. Teltumbde stand? What is the ideological and political quality of Mr. Teltumbdeâs stand? Marxist? or Ambedkarite? or something else? That is what we criticized Mr. Teltumbde for in the Seminar: this fetish for method, the method of hard science, to borrow from Dewey! And then test all theories and philosophies from the sans-theory sans-philosophy scientific method! Mr. Teltumbde forgets the basic teaching of science: you canât escape theory; even those who claim to be purged of all theories are, in fact, putting forward a theory. In natural (hard) science too, one needs to take an a priori theoretical position, namely, the dialectical approach, otherwise they are obliged to fall in the pit of determinism or agnosticism, because at any given point, science cannot give answers for all questions. That was the tragedy of debate between the Copenhagen School (Hiesenberg and Bohr) and Einstein; a fetish for science always leads to this âdysjunctive synthesisâ of determinism and agnosticism. Mr. Teltumbde has actually justified our criticism of his hidden Deweyanism in his new article. So, supposedly, Mr. Teltumbde is not concerned about the âcorrectness or otherwise of these manifestosâ. However, this supposition itself hides in itself the justification of a trans-theoretical and trans-historical super-method, as one can see. We on our part can say that everybody has a position, irrespective of his/her will and they criticize or admire anything from that position only. We criticized the theory and politics of Ambedkar from a Marxist perspective, because we believe that claiming to have a position over and above theory, in congruence with the scientifc super-method is a hollow claim. Mr. Teltumbde should clearly put forward his ideological position, because any ambiguity in this matter leads to traumatic results, as has been the case till now.
9. In the ninth para, Mr. Teltumbde, while criticizing his Ambedkarite critics, has tried to make the Deweyan thought more tolerable to Marxism and Science. Deweyan thought never aims to enrich any theory as Mr. Teltumbde thinks. It is consciously anti-theory. Dewey was skeptical of all theories all his life. For him, what matters is the pure and pristine method of the âhard sciencesâ; the so-called social sciences create theories, rather construct them out of nothing and so Dewey has a disdain for all social sciences. Now, this is a completely different matter altogether that Dewey himself was following a theory, the theory of pragmatism and instrumentalism which biologizes everything. For instance, for Dewey every organism lives in a context and it has to adapt and readapt constantly to survive. For Dewey, in nature the process of development does not have ruptures or breaks; it is a smooth progression in which the organism adapts and re-adapts itself according to the context. So, for Dewey, in society too, the pattern of development should not include ruptures (revolutions/revolts); the human beings should make a good use of intelligence. The state is the best mechanism to represent this good use of intelligence and reason. Violence is waste. We cannot go here in a detailed critique of Dewey. However, it seems that either Mr. Teltumbde needs to have a serious relook on the works of Dewey, or he is trying to misappropriate Dewey to make him tolerable! We questioned Mr. Teltumbdeâs argument that scientists follow the same method in the laboratories. This is the method of the instrumentalists in Quantum theory who raise the slogan of âshut up and calculateâ; in fact, that is precisely the slogan of cybernetics also, with which Mr. Teltumbde seems to be fascinated. In these schools, we are told to follow a trans-theoretical, pure and pristine scientific method to test and calculate without any âtheoretical prejudiceâ, and this is precisely what Mr. Teltumbde does again and again in his latest article: and eternal disdain for theory and an incorrigible fetish for method. However, we know now that this itself is a prejudice and there is another school within the so-called âhardâ sciences to which people like Sakata, Gould, Yukawa, etc. belong, which believes in having an a priori dialectical position, even before entering the laboratory. So, Mr. Teltumbdeâs claim that neither is he in support of anything, nor does he oppose anything, is an unscientific claim. Irrespective of your wish and will, you always do that as soon as you make a political statement or value judgement. Such theoretical indifference or non-partisan attitude is a myth.
Moreover, we never said that Mr. Teltumbde was trashing Marx or talking about his failure. It was in fact said by the self-proclaimed well-wishers of Mr. Teltumbde, that is, the five comrades of Republican Panthers who attended the seminar, who did not utter a word during the seminar, but immediately issued a statement against us and in supposed support of Mr. Teltumbde! Besides, we are curious regarding why Mr. Teltumbde is always in the teacher-preacher mode? He claims that he was trying to sensitize (!?) people present in the seminar who were intoxicated by this or that â-ismâ! Again, Mr. Teltumbde is at his Deweyan best. He is avert to call himself an Ambedkarite or a Marxist, or any â-istâ for that matter. He is in a trans-theoretical methodological position or pulpit, from where he is supposed to sensitize us, and we are supposed to hear his sermons! Is that not a self-obsessed attitude on part of Mr. Teltumbde? We also know and do not need Mr. Teltumbde to make us realize that Revolutions happen in reality; neither in the paper nor in our statements, did we show any dogmatic or closed-ended approach to Marxism. Even, Mr. Teltumbde corrected himself in his second statement and said that he did not call us dogmatist (though he really did!) and he was referring only to the paragraphs of the approach paper that mentioned his name. But if you listen to the first statement of Mr. Teltumbde, you will find that he had not been referring to those paragraphs only; he was commenting on the paper in general, and that too, without reading it properly. What should we call this, if not a U-turn, a volte-face?
10. In the tenth para, Mr. Teltumbde argues that the distrust of Ambedkar towards Marx stemmed from Marxâs claim to a âgrand theoryâ. (Such a claim was ascribed to Marxism by the postmodernists. Marx himself never claimed that he is creator of a âgrand theoryâ. We will come back to this point later.) However, in the Seminar, he himself admitted that Ambedkar had not read Marxism properly and his list of books that he studied shows that he had a very supreficial understanding of Marxism and he had never read Marxist classics. Clearly, Ambedkarâs skepticism to Marxism had nothing to do with his dislike for âgrand theoriesâ (Marx never made such a claim; he only claimed, together with Engels, to be the creator of the dialectial and historical materialist science of history and society). Ambedkarâs skepticism stemmed from two sources: one, his own class position and two, his academic training in the US where he became a Deweyan instrumentalist and pragmatist and in London School of Economics, where he was influenced by the Austrian school of economics, of Carl Menger. These intellectual sources are bitterly critical of Marxism. This in itself was enough for Ambedkar to become diametrically opposed to Marxism. Whenever, he strove to form an alliance with Communists, his prime mover was never the politics of the working class, but the same good old pragmatism of Dewey. Secondly, the account of Ambedkarâs political history that Mr. Teltumbde himself gives in the tenth para, bears a testimony to the throughout compromising, non-radical, non-massline and surrenderist approach of Ambedkar. We do not need to deconstruct the text of Mr. Teltumbdeâs article here to show this, because it is self-evident. Mr. Teltumbdeâs narrative itself shows that the Congress was always willing to co-opt Ambedkar in its political scheme. Does not this fact itself tell a lot about the politics of Ambedkar? Mr. Teltumbde seems to be in the awe of Ambedkarâs plan for so-called âstate-socialismâ which has nothing to do with socialism! Socialism does not mean state ownership of means of production. The defining characteristic of Socialism is the class character of the state itself. As Engels had already shown in the 19th century, State capitalism (one can read socialism as well) is nothing, but capitalism pushed to extreme. Ambedkarâs economic program was a paraphrasing of Deweyan economic program, for which state is the most rational actor and therefore it should have the monopoly over economic activities and planning. We expect Mr. Teltumbde at least to be aware of this much. However, he is much too eager to perform a Marxist appropriation of Ambedkar, though in a clandestine fashion, while claiming that there is no meeting point between the ideas of Ambedkar and Marxism.
11. The eleventh para is probably is most interesting para in Mr. Teltumbdeâs article. It claims that Mr. Teltumbde follows Marxist methodology (note: not Marxist theory/ideology/philosophy! The same old Deweyan skepticism for theory and fetish for method), but he would not call himself a Marxist because a lot of Marxists are dogmatic! However, Mr. Teltumbde does not mention that I criticized this position in my response in the Seminar, to which he did not say a word in his latest article. One calls himself a Marxist, or a liberal, or a post-structuralist, not because what the alleged followers of these ideologies do! Such a logic will lead us to non-sensical conclusions. One calls himself a Marxist because he/she believes in the approach and method of what he/she believes to be the Marxist approach and method. If majority of people have become indifferent to pain, tragedy, etc and have become inhuman, would you stop calling yourself a human being? No! Then why do not you call yourself a Marxist, if you believe in Marxism? However, we know the answer to this question already! Again, identifying with a theory and ideology always scares a Deweyan away! Secondly, never in the paper did we say that Marxism is a dogma and it cannot be developed. On the contrary, the major part of our paper is not a critique of Ambedkar and Ambedkarites, but of the Communist movement of India, which failed to understand the problem of caste and apply Marxism creatively in the Indian conditions. But, apparently Mr. Teltumbde had launched an attack on our paper without reading it properly.
Moreover, the iconoclasm, radicalism, etc of Ambedkar might be the personal views of Mr. Teltumbde and we might or might not differ in this regard. But our concern in the paper as well as in the entire seminar was not to analyze how deeply and passionately Ambedkar felt about the problem of caste, but what program does Ambedkar have for the solution of the problem and it is in this context that the criticism of Ambedkar put forward by our approach paper should be seen and understood.
Also, it does not matter at what age did Mr. Teltumbde become a Marxist! It does not affect the merits or lacunae of his arguments today and in any case it does not give any advantage to his logic. Kautsky was a much older Marxist that Lenin was. Does that influence the way in which Kautsky went haywire in his theorizations about Imperialism?
12. In the twelfth para, Mr. Teltumbde shows how everything that Ambedkar did for the emancipation of dalits failed miserably and goes to the extent of exclaiming, âThe less said of Ambedkarite politics, the better it is.â However, he does not trace the origin of these mistakes, that is, the incorrigibly bourgeious liberal, pragmatist, instrumentalist, regressive thoughts of Ambedkar. He did not believe in the revolutionary energy of the masses, but believed in the power of heroes and specifically, the state. The reason for Ambedkarâs failure lies in his philosophy and politics and that is what we have subjected to criticism in our paper, not the intent of Ambedkar. Theoretical discourse never takes the issue of intent into consideration because this issue is a highly subjective issue. What is at stake in any political discussion is the scientific and philosophical character of a theory and its historical role. What the carriers of a theory might have felt at different moments does not matter in history, as Mr. Teltumbde himself claimed in his first statement, âindividuals donât matter in revolutionsâ. The conspicuous absence of a serious political and philosophical criticism of Ambedkar in any of the statements put forward by Mr. Teltumbde is troubling. He stops at mentioning a fact, that is, all of Ambedkarâs experiments ended in a grand failure. But he never asks the question âwhy?â Why does Mr. Teltumbde forget his celebrated scientific method here? This is a curious emission, as we can see.
13., 14., 15., 16. and 17. In these paragraphs, again, Mr. Teltumbde once again, is in his Deweyan glory. He talks about the failure of almost all great men in history. However, we would like to remind him that the task of the approach paper (and other papers as well) was not to assess the failure of men and their particular experiments. The real question is the assessment of the theory and methodology given by these men. Men fail and succeed. That does not matter much in history. The basic question is whether Marx was able to give a science of history? Whether he was able to give an approach and a method which is scientific? Obviously, Marxism is not an aggregation of the statements of Marx. Marxism is name of the approach (worldview) and the method that Marx gave. Marx might himself have failed to use this dialectical materialist method at a number of instances, for example, his theory of Asiatic mode of production, or his assessment of the British rule in India, etc. However, that does not make any difference as far as Marxist approach and method are concerned. A number of his expectations, judgements and statements were proven wrong by history. That might be called, in a limited sense, the failure of some of speculative judgements of Marx, the individual. But Marx could not be right in all his judgements (wouldnât it be non-dialectical to expect such infallibility!?). The point here is to understand the difference between different statements of a person and his approach and method. Marx himself believed that dialectical materialism will develop with the changing world, because the basic premise of this science is to study the world in its motion. So, the theory of imperialism was developed by Lenin, not Marx, because finance monopoly capitalism came into proper existence only during the lifetime of Lenin. However, again the basic point to note here is that Lenin followed the same approach and method to study the world, that Marx had followed. So, to talk about the âfailures of great menâ at such a length and then claim that the failure of Marx was more catastrophic than that of Ambedkar does not make any sense. It is like the history of men, in the 17th century style, that does not tell anything about anything! Mr. Teltumbde argues that Marxism needs to be developed constantly in such a way, as if he is the first person to say so, or, as if we have said something different in the paper. Neither in the paper, nor in our statements did we say that what Marx said was the last word! We would not have felt the need to organize a 5-day Seminar to discuss any question at all, had we believed so. We have written in our approach paper about the mistakes committed in analyzing the problem of caste by Marxists and Communists. Then why Mr. Teltumbde is erecting an imaginary Marxist figure and then raining it with his bows and bayonets?
Besides, Marxism never says that revolutions are inevitable. That would amount to economism. Therefore, to try to prove the âcatastrophic failure of Marxâ by arguing that Socialist experiments fell down, or, revolutions did not take place, is utterly useless! The economic crises of capitalism themselves never lead automatically to revolution. Every crisis presents dual possibilities: the revolutionary possibility (if the revolutionary vanguard is in a position to lead the masses to revolution) or the reactionary possibility (Fascism). There is always a possibility of counter-revolution and all the great Marxist thinkers were aware of it, including Marx, Engels, and Lenin. So, the fact that sustainable revolutions did not take place in the twentieth century, does not show in anyway, the failure of the alleged âgrand theoryâ of Marx. Marxism gives the tool to analyze the failure of revolutions too, and a number of Marxists have subjected the Soviet and Chinese experiments of socialism to Marxist criticism and through such analyses only, that more advanced socialist experiments can be conducted. This is what Walter Benjamin called âredemptive activityâ of theory. Every science develops through such redemptive activity and Marxism, that is, the science of society is no exception. In such a historical movement, the failures of individuals do not matter. What matters is the approach and method given by them. Marxists have not reacted in the vein of Ambedkarites, who have been targeting Mr. Teltumbde without any substantial reason and in this respect, we completely empathize with the agony and anger of Mr. Teltumbde. However, Mr. Teltumbde himself is to blame for this ironic situation. Taking a position above ideology and theory always leads to such a mess.
Moreover, what Mr. Teltumbde claims to have said in regard of the new developments which cannot be explained from classical Marxist position was this: Mr. Teltumbde argued that Marx talked about labour-saving devices, but in contemporary capitalism, we cannot talk about labour-saving devices but labour-displacing devices. Now, everyone who has read the elementary Marxist political economy knows that every labour-saving device becomes a labour-displacing device under capitalism. Mr. Teltumbde is immensely overjoyed in his discovery; but sadly, this discovery has already been made, and even more sadly Mr. Teltumbde is 150 years late! There is not real difference between labour-saving and labour-displacing devices. Mr. Teltumbde was seriously concerned about the scenario where it would become possible to run a factory with one worker! This very fear has led a number of intellectuals to conclude that working class is vanishing from the scene of history. Such a conclusion only shows that the person in question does not understand Marxist political economy. Such a situation will only create even larger army of the unemployed which Marx had called âgrave diggers of capitalismâ. Working class is not vanishing; on the contrary it would be pushed towards revolts. Needless to say, such revolts would not transform into revolution without a revolutionary theory and a vanguard armed with such a theory. Obviously, there are new developments in the modus-operandi of Imperialism after the Second World War which need to be analyzed and understood from Marxist perspective. However, these very ever new developments have been the prime mover in the development of Marxism as the science of history and society; just like the so-called âhard sciencesâ of Mr. Teltumbde! What is so stupefying about this? In a nutshell, Mr. Teltumbde needs to differentiate between assessment of men and assessment of approaches and methods. From that standpoint, it can be asked whether Marxism or Ambedkar provide the correct approach and method to understand everything that exists around us. Mr. Teltumbde believes that Ambedkar had no theory and he was a pragmatist who kept experimenting with newer things. However, this itself was his theory, which Mr. Teltumbde admits, he liked! And this very theory was subjected to criticism during the Seminar. What is wrong in that? Does that amount to trashing or rejecting Ambedkar? We donât think so.
In the seventeenth para, Mr. Teltumbde traces the ideological origins of Ambedkar. However, again, he is trying to misappropriate Ambedkar. Ambedkarâs dislike for Marxism did not only stem from his experience of Indian Communists, but his class position and his academic training. Secondly, he never used Marxism as a benchmark, as Mr. Teltumbde wants us to believe; he had called Marxism âpigsâ philosophyâ which shows his clear attitude. We have criticized this attitude of Ambedkar without using the derogatory terminology used by Ambedkar. We do not find anything wrong in it.
18. In this para, Mr. Teltumbde is again in his teacher-preacher mode. He rightly points out that Ambedkar has a huge contribution in putting the question of caste on the national agenda. He is also right about the contribution of communists in this, who empirically fought militantly against caste oppression. Indian communists as well as Ambedkar failed to devise a program for the annihilation of caste. In the beginning of his article, Mr. Teltumbde says that hierarchizing is a brahmanical attitude. However, he adopts this brahmanical attitude according to his convenience. Here, he says that the contribution of Ambedkar was much greater that Communists in democratization! He does not feel it necessary to back his statements with logic and reason. So he performs another intellectual somersault and adds that he says so rhetorically because he wants communists to think about the opportunities that they have lost! Again, Mr. Teltumbde is quite obsessed with his teaching capabilities. Nobody denies the fact that there is a need to analyze the mistakes of Communist movement on the question of caste and that is what we have done in our paper, apart from a brief critique of Ambedkar. But this hierarchizing of Mr. Teltumbde is surprising and we do not agree to the hierarchy of contributions proposed by Mr. Teltumbde. At least, he should stay consistent in his approach and should not shift positions so rapidly, following Ambedkar.
19. and 20. In the nineteenth para again, Mr. Teltumbde argues in a way as if we cling to the metaphor of âbase and superstructureâ mechanically and goes on to claim that all dalit Marxists (weâre not sure what does that mean!) have abandoned it and there has been a debate in international Marxism about this metaphor. We believe, and we have made it clear in the paper, that the metaphor of base and superstructure is an analytical tool to study any social formation and it cannot be used in a mechanical and instrumentalist fashion, as Indian communists have often done, specially while studying caste. We have particularly criticized certain communists of Indian communist movement who believed that caste belongs to superstructure. On the contrary, we have argued in the paper that caste belongs to the base as well as the superstructure. However, we can not go in detail about it; those who are interested can download the approach paper from the website of Arvind Memorial Trust and read our position. But here again, Mr. Teltumbde is erecting an imaginery Marxist figure for the purpose of bashing.
Moreover, the criticism that Indian communists failed to understand the question of caste and class was put forward by Mr. Teltumbde. We ourselves have criticized the Indian communist movement for this failure. But Mr. Teltumbde presented the matter in a way, as if Indian communists did not take up the question of caste and called it their biggest sin. We objected to this because it is factually wrong. Sukhvinder responded to this criticism of Mr. Teltumbde and criticized him for impeaching communists for what they are not guilty of. He argues in his latest article, âSurprisingly, there is no admission ever from the Marxists (regarding this mistake)â. Again, Mr. Teltumbde is distorting the facts. Our paper itself bears testimony to a bitterly critical approach towards the mistakes of the communists in understading the question of caste. In fact, a larger share of the paper is dedicated to the criticism of communist movement, rather that Ambedkar and Phule. As far as, the question of base and superstructure is concerned, one can refer to the approach paper. Our understanding is completely different from what Mr. Teltumbde is portraying it to be.
21. In this para, Mr. Teltumbde continues in the tone of teaching-preaching. He claims that it was he, who has been saying all along that castes basically seek hierarchy and cannot survive in non-hierarchical waters; under external pressure they contract together, but without external pressure they start splitting. He again claims that all caste movements have failed to note this core characteristics of caste. This again is a hollow claim. Historians like Suvira Jaiswal and R.S. Sharma have already drawn our attention to precisely these characteristics. However, like always Mr. Teltumbde is stupefied at his own âinventionsâ and âdiscoveriesâ and as always these inventions and discoveries have already been made and Mr. Teltumbde is sadly late! Mr. Teltumbde argues that the dalits and lower castes have to understand that its not caste identity but class identity which has the emancipatory potential and he also advises the communists to show to the dalits that they have changed. We believe that the communists can show this only through struggles and a proper understanding of the question of caste. We also believe that (and we have said this in the paper) without the participation of dalits there can be no revolution and without a revolution there can be no dalit emancipation. However, Mr. Teltumbde does not even mention that. Secondly, he again shows his skepticism for theory and ideology when he argues that there should be a convergence between the dalit and communist movements, not â-ismsâ and such a convergence will quickly fructify into Indian Revolution. Revolution is first of all a matter of science; without a proper scientific and revolutionary theory, there can be no revolutionary movement, to borrow from Lenin. Mr. Teltumbde invokes the authority of Lenin according to his convenience. Lenin was very particular about the theory which guides the movement. Mr. Teltumbdeâs Deweyan deviation is apparent once again.
22. and 23. In these paragraphs, Mr. Teltumbde presents his own alternative concept of reservation, which should be limited to the SCs only, who face exclusion at the hands of the society. The state should deploy other methods, according to him, to do away with the backwardness of the BCs and tribals. The reservation policy should not only include the public sector but the entire social sphere, which includes public as well as private. According to Mr. Teltumbde such a policy would have been free from the malaise of the present policy of reservation that has become the most potent weapon of the ruling class in dividing the people at will. Then, Mr. Teltumbde adds several more conditions to his alternative policy of reservation. He believes that in such a scheme the burden of annihilation of caste would have fallen on the society and the latter would have been obliged to do away with caste discrimination. Though, we would like to know more about his alternative vision of reservation policy, it seems to us that, first, even if the policy of reservation is extended to entire societal sphere, the dalits would not be destigmatized; on the contrary, as far as we can visualize, dalits would be stigmatized even more. But the ways in which stigma is attached to them, would become more subtle, rather than being crude and âin-the-faceâ. second, this would not in anyway, make it the burden of the society to do away with caste. Caste cannot be annihilated without the withering away of class, state, the interpersonal disparities of mental and manual labour, town and country and industry and agriculture. Even after revolution, several cultural revolutions would be required to annihilate caste. However, we are open to know more about the âintricateâ model of reservation suggested by Mr. Teltumbde. Anyway, that is not the point here. We would still suggest that had Mr. Teltumbde been this diligent and meticulous in adopting a more sound theoretical position, there would have been less problems. The basic question in our opinion today is that the problem is not with any particular model of reservation policy, but the policy of reservation itself. It might have been a democratic right till a certain time after independence; however, any model of reservation would only create an illusion today. Our demand should be free and equal education for all and employment for all. Only such a demand can push the system to its point of impossibility and in struggle for such a demand the caste boundaries could be weakened.
Mr. Teltumbdeâs thinking is too much dependent on the role of the state, and what else can we expect from a true Deweyan! He thinks that if state implements his model of reservation, the society would be obliged to do away with caste. This is like a foolâs paradise. State can never oblige a society to think or act in a particular way. It is the concrete political, social and economic struggles that shape the ways in which the society acts, in which the state is sustained or destroyed, in which a new state is established. State through any possible kind of âaffirmative actionâ cannot oblige the society to think, say or do anything. Mr. Teltumbde did not explain even this âalternativeâ Deweyan understanding of reservation policy in the semiar, and now he is rebuking us for our closed-ended approach. Is that fair?!
24. In this para, Mr. Teltumbde wants to prove at any cost that our paper does not offer anything new as far as the solution part is concerned. He argues that such propositions can be found in any communist document on caste and that even Ambedkarâs proposals were more radical than that of the approach paper presented by us. First of all, unlike Mr. Teltumbde, we do not have any particular fascination with the claim to novelty. What is right, is right, irrespective of the fact that a number of people have already said it. Secondly, he only mentions the propositions which are common to any radical charter on the caste question. We have two parts in the section pertaining to our proposed program on caste question. The first deals with long term tasks and the solution of caste question by a socialist society and the other with short term tasks that must be performed immediately. We would urge Mr. Teltumbde to go through the entire section of the approach paper again to understand the particularity of our position. Our stand on reservation is not shared by any of the Left organizations. Our stand on new type of anti-caste organizations also is not shared by the majority of the communist groups. It would be useless to mention each and every proposition here. We would request interested readers to visit the website of Arvind Memorial Trust (arvindtrust.org) and download the pdf file of the approach paper and read it. Mr. Teltumbde should compare proposal by proposal to prove that Ambedkarâs proposals were more radical, though according to Mr. Teltumbde, such a hierarchizing approach smacks of brahmanism, yet he becomes brahmanical according to his whims and fancies! We do not think in terms of âmoreâ or âlessâ radical. It is question of standpoint. Anyone who reads our paper, would understand that ours is an alternative communist program of annihilation of caste, which is not dogmatic and open-ended. We never claim that our program is final and best; on the contrary, we believe that many things could be added into it or even subtracted from it. It is a humble proposal open for debate. We mentioned this in the seminar too. But Mr. Teltumbde is much too eager to prove that we have reproduced the old communist program! So we definitely cannot convince him.
25. In this para, once again the self-obsession of Mr. Anand Teltumbde is best apparent. Mr. Teltumbde argues that he has devised a practical blue print for the annihilation of caste in his book âAnti-Imperialism and Annihilation of Casteâ. Now look at his findings, which he claims to be new and unprecedented. He says that he found that since the capitalist onslaught from the colonial period through the 1960s, the ritual castes are weakened and to speak about castes in a classical hierarchy is fruitless. Now, any student/academician/activist familiar with the modern historiography of caste knows that this finding of Mr. Teltumbde has nothing new in it. Irfan Habib in his famous article âCaste in Indian Historyâ makes the same argument. Historians like Suvira Jaiswal, R.S.Sharma, Vivekanand Jha had shown this way before Mr. Teltumbde wrote his book. So Mr. Teltumbde claim to novelty in this respect is at best hollow and at worst, a false one. The relation of caste system with rural bourgeoisie and rural proletariat also has long been established. Mr. Teltumbde is again making a false claim of novelty. Even documents of various communist groups in mention this facet of the caste system in the rural areas. How the economic interests of the kulaks and farmers express themselves in caste terms also is a known fact for a long time now. The same could be said about his âfindingsâ about the nexus between the state and the class of the rural bourgeoisie. The fourth point of Mr. Teltumbde regarding the role of the advanced elements of society in educating the people against the evil of caste through political economy, also is an old one and has been put forward by many people including Ambedkar. However, we are skeptic about this hope of Mr. Teltumbde. Lastly, the Left is given the role of dealing âphysicallyâ with the elements who are incorrigible and participate in caste atrocities! Amazing! (The role of the Left is reduced to dealing âphysicallyâ with the perpetrators of caste atrocities while the role of teaching/preaching/sermonizing is secured for Mr. Teltumbde, because in his view, it it Mr. Teltumbde who has provided a blue-print for annihilation of caste!) To make his argument somewhat more tolerable, he says that through this role the Left can win the confidence of dalits, which will strengthen the forces of revolution and annihilation of castes. Then, Mr. Teltumbde gives his final teaching, âDo this much, and you will find yourself close to Annihilation of Castes.â To render his propositions more credibility, Mr. Teltumbde tells us that his model his supported by his own research in cybernetics! We can see Mr. Teltumbde going back, again, to his Deweyan âscientificâ determinism. Whatever Mr. Teltumbde says, this much is clear: his claims to novelty are baseless and he has nothing new to offer as far as annihilation of caste is concerned.
26. In this para, Mr. Teltumbde claims that he did not retract his statements. He said that what I (Abhinav) strove to refute in my statement (the Deweyanism of Ambedkar and of Mr. Teltumbde in a different way) was not shared by Mr. Teltumbde. However, he himself admits that he liked the Deweyan method and found it akin to the method of science. This is what I refuted! I argued that Deweyan method projects itself to be the scientific method, but it is not. I have already shown in this response how Mr. Teltumbde is a true Deweyan. His whole line of argument is Deweyan in nature. Now Mr. Teltumbde is trying to show that he has no liking for Deweyan pragmatism and instrumentalism! Secondly, he did say that he agrees with what had been said by me. He said, âmany good things have been said here and I agree with them.â Now, he is saying that he was referring to the paper. This is stupefying! And even if he was referring to the paper, he actually did reject the entire paper as being casteist and brahmanical in his first statement. (One can see all this in the video, the link of which is given below). Then he retracted his charge in the second statement. Mr. Teltumbde makes an amusing statement here. He says that he spoke something uncomfortably to get out of there, which cannot be construed as agreement with us! Now we leave the task of judging this bizarre statement to the readers. We would ask the readers as well as Mr. Teltumbde to see the video again. His tone in the first statement was like that of a preacher/teacher who came there to educate the ignorant Marxists. In the second statement, he âuncomfortablyâ expressed his agreement with âmuch of what had been said thereâ (in the paper or in my critique of Mr. Teltumbde, it does not matter, because there is no contradiction in the stand put forward in the paper and what I said). I would say the change is apparent between the tone of the first statement and the tone of the second statement itself, and it is so apparent that anyone can see it. He quotes me (âaisa mujhe dhwanit hua ki aapka comment pure paper par thaâ). However, anyone who sees the video can understand that I was saying in a humble way that âyes, Mr. Teltumbde, you actually did reject our paper as casteist and brahmanicalâ. However, my tone could only be humble, because, as Mr. Teltumbde himself says, he is a âsenior activistâ! Now he can call it hallucination, or whatever he likes. But the video of the debate speaks for itself. This is very lame defence of his shifting positions by Mr. Teltumbde, to say the least.
27. In the last para, Mr. Teltumbde has bitterly rebuked the Ambedkarites who have been attacking him since his participation in the Chandigarh Seminar. However, here too it is not clear what he is defending in Ambedkar: the individual or his ideas. Because as far as thoughts are concerned, we do not know what can we learn from Deweyan pragmatism in our task of annihilation of caste. In fact, at several other places, Mr. Teltumbde himself says that Ambedkar never had a program for annihilation of caste. Then which ideas/thoughts of Ambedkar should be defended? Then again, Mr. Teltumbde shows his self-obsession and his baseless belief in the âinnocence of dalitsâ. Let us have a look at some statements made in this para: âIt is not I but you who have insulted Babasaheb Ambedkar in the process by exploiting the sentiments of his innocent people against someone (that is Mr. Teltumbde himself!) who has worked singularly for them keeping away from the camp of the ruling classes.â; âI am the one who has never shown any iota of bhakti to Babasaheb Ambedkar ulike your tribe but sincerely followed his role model in excelling in whatever I did, in standing firm on the side of the oppressed masses, securing capability of analyzing the world around us on their behalfâ¦â Now one can see, to what extent Mr. Teltumbde is a sad victim of political Narcissism and self-obsession. He thinks of himself as the self-proclaimed hero of the dalit cause. And curiously enough, he has charged us of self-obsession!
In the end, we can only say that everyone should watch the video of our debate with Mr. Anand Teltumbde again and see the change in everything: the tone, the content, and the form. Watching the video itself is sufficient to understand the hollow claims made by Mr. Teltumbde in this article. We have given a parawise reply so that there is no possibility of confusion and all comrades can understand our refutation of Mr. Teltumbde clearly. In short, Toronto's offence consists of Phil Kessel and its 2nd line. It is good enough to have three (Kessel, Grabovski, and Kulemin) of the six top goal scorers in the Northeast division. This is good enough to be competitive when coupled with good goaltending from James Reimer. You must remember they are competing against Boston's Tim Thomas, Montreal's Carey Price, and Buffalo's Ryan Miller.
Information Used to Assess Lines and Players
There are 3 players to a line and 30 teams in the NHL. As a result, one can set performance thresholds for each line by looking at the goal scoring league wide in segments of 90 forwards. Within these segments, you can designate a playoff and non-playoff echelon based on 16 teams making the playoffs.
Reviewing last season's statistics shows a player must score 21 goals to be in the top 90 NHL goal scorers. In other words, scoring at least 21 goals is first-line quality scoring. Scoring at least 25 goals is playoff quality first line performance. Furthermore, 32 or more goals will place you at the top 16 goal scorer level in the league.
Second line quality scoring is 14 to 21 goals where the playoff echelon is 17 to 21 goals. Third line quality is 9 to 14 goals with 11 to 14 goals as the range for the playoff echelon. Fourth line quality is 4 to 9 goals with 6 to 9 goals for the playoff echelon.
You may have your own criteria for assessing goal scoring performance. However, most people are satisfied with benchmarking against the league.
Age is another factor. Ages 24 to 26 are typically a player's peak scoring years. You can assume players younger than 24 will improve as they get older. After the age of 30, players tend to decline. The ones who excelled before the age of 24 tend to take longer to decline versus the others. In other words, they can sustain good performance into their 30s.
Scoring percentage is another consideration when evaluating players. For me, a player must have at least a 10% scoring percentage to get regular ice time. You can make exceptions for exceptional play makers. Otherwise, the player should be slotted for fourth line duty.
First line Phil Kessel carries the 1st line. Getting proper line-mates for him has been a problem. Expect one or two acquisitions to be made by next season to correct this problem.
Phil Kessel RW GP - 61 G - 25 A - 19 Pts - 30 Pct - 9.5%
Age 23. 6'0" 202 lbs. Drafted 5th overall in 2006 Entry Draft. Leads the team in goals scored. Will score over 30 goals this season. Probably around 35 goals. Presently 15th in NHL goal scoring and 5th in power play goals. Has recently come out of a 14 game scoring drought with 6 goals in the last 5 games. How he finishes the season should indicate what you can expect for next season. He is the only true 1st line forward on the team.
Tyler Bozak C GP - 61 G - 10 A - 13 Pts - 26 Pct - 10.6%
Age 24. 6'1" 195 lbs. Tyler Bozak is having a terrible season as Toronto's 1st line centre. His scoring production looks even more terrible when compared to other Leaf centres when they were the same age. At age 24, Kyle Wellwood (59-8-13-21) and John Mitchell (60-6-17-23) had comparable scoring production with lesser roles and ice time. Has not been the play-making centre hoped by Toronto management. Bozak's penalty killing and face-off skills might save his NHL career. Presently, Bozak wins 54.1% of his face-offs and Ron Wilson characterizes him as the team's best penalty killing forward. Toronto only needs to offer Bozak $918,750 to qualify him for next season.
Joffrey Lupul LW GP - 7 G - 0 A - 3 Pts - 3 Pct - 0.0%
Age 27. 6'1" 206 lbs. A proven 25-goal scorer who returned two months ago from serious injuries. Drafted 7th overall in 2002 Entry Draft. His presence adds size to Toronto's top six. Allows Toronto time to find a more suitable player for 1st line LW.
There are approximately 60 forwards in the NHL who can be categorized as true 1st line forwards. Phil Kessel is one of them. Brian Burke's challenge is to find a way to acquire at least one more. Two, if Nazem Kadri does not develop into a 1st line player.
Second Line Toronto has the best scoring 2nd line the NHL. All three players are playing to their full potential.
Clarke MacArthur LW GP - 61 G - 18 A - 28 Pts - 46 Pct - 14.3%
Age 25. 6'0" 190 lbs. Toronto's top scorer. Having a career year. Can score 25 goals this season. Playing very well with Grabovski and Kulemin. Leads the forwards in hits.
Nikolai Kulemin LW/RW GP - 61 G - 21 A - 21 Pts - 42 Pct - 14.9%
Age 24. 6'1 225 lbs. Biggest skill forward. Strong on skates. Hard to knock from puck. Now shooting more. Scored 9 goals in the last 21 games played. Will score 25 goals.
Mikhail Grabovski - Age 27. GP - 60 G - 24 A - 20 Pts - 44 Pct - 13.9%
Age 26. 5'11" 183 lbs. Very steady goal scoring. 20th in NHL goal scoring. Most likely to score over 30 goals.
Another team will have to offer something awfully good for Burke part with any of these players on his so-called second line. All three players are in the peak years of their playing career.
Third Line Doing the job defensively. Hitting and blocking shots. However, more size and scoring is needed.
Colby Armstrong RW/LW GP - 41 G - 7 A - 13 Pts - 20 Pct - 13.7%
Age 28. 6'2" 195 lbs. Size, toughness, aggressiveness, and an NHL shot. He anchors the 3rd line.
Darryl Boyce C GP - 26 G - 3 A - 6 Pts - 9 Pct - 23.1%
Age 26. 6'0" 200 lbs. Is doing almost everything asked of him. Hits, blocks shots, and scores. Needs to improve on his 45.5% face-off pct. Will eventually become a 4th line/depth player as more talent gets added to the team.
Fred Sjostrom LW GP - 52 G - 2 A - 3 Pts - 5 Pct - 3.7%
Age 27. 6'1" 218 lbs. One of the leading hitters on the team. Good hard skater. Scoring pct is too far below 10% to play on the third line. Not likely to return to the team when he becomes a UFA (Unrestricted Free Agent) at end of season.
The third line needs to get big players with NHL shots for Toronto to be more competitive. Presently, only Colby Armstrong meets these requirements. Perhaps, at the start of next season, it becomes a launch pad for Joe Colborne and Nazem Kadri. However, the long-term prospects appear to be Christian Hanson and Marcel Mueller.
Fourth Line A place holder for depth and role players.
Tim Brent C GP - 60 G - 7 A - 6 Pts - 13 Pct - 14.3%
Age 26. 6'0" 188 lbs. Is doing almost everything asked of him. Hits, blocks shots, wins face-offs, kills penalties, and scores. Face-off pct has improved to 51.8%. His versatility and dedication assures him of a spot in next year's line-up.
Mike Brown LW/RW GP - 29 G - 2 A - 3 Pts - 5 Pct - 6.1%
Age 25. 5'11" 205 lbs. Hitting, blocking shots, skating, and fighting. What more can you ask for from a $537k cap salary fourth liner? This earned him a three year extension at $736k cap salary.
Joey Crabb LW/RW GP - 28 G - 1 A - 8 Pts - 9 Pct - 3.3%
Age 27. 6'1" 190 lbs. Simply a depth player on a depth player contract.
Jay Rosehill LW GP - 17 G - 1 A - 1 Pts - 2 Pct - 12.5%
Age 25. 6'3" 215 lbs. Filling in the tough guy roll during Colton Orr's absence.

Age 28. 6'3" 222 lbs. Teams ran Toronto out of the rink before Colton Orr's arrival. He put an end to that nonsense. However, he got involved in too many fights and may have ended his hockey career with a bad concussion.
Expect Toronto's 4th line to continue to consist of scrappy and feisty role-players. Over time, these players will get bigger as per Brian Burke's blue-print.
Kris Versteeg RW/LW GP - 53 G - 14 A - 21 Pts - 35 Pct - 10.9%
Age 24. 5'10" 182 lbs. A very good 3rd line player who was traded for a 1st and 3rd round draft pick. An excellent addition to a strong team with large forwards. However, he could not play well enough to be on the team's 1st line as initially hoped when he was acquired. He has turned out to be an established 20-goal scorer with little upside.

Age 20. 6'0" 185 lbs. Drafted 7th overall in 2009 Entry Draft. Maintaining a steady scoring pace in AHL. Don't be surprised to see Kadri back in the NHL at the start of the 2011-12 season. Might begin next season on the third line. Expect him to play on the top six within one to two years.
Joe Colborne C GP - 3 G - 3 A - 0 Pts - 3 Pct - 60.0% (AHL)
Age 21. 6'5" 190 lbs. Acquired from Boston in a trade for Tomas Kaberle. Drafted 16th overall in 2008 Entry Draft. Like Kadri, don't be surprised to see Colborne in the NHL at the start of the 2011-12 season playing on the third line. Also expect him to play on the top six within one to two years.

The addition of Joe Colborne has filled out Toronto's prospect list where they can be relied on within one year or two to fill in existing holes on the forward lines. Some prospects have not made significant advances or even regressed. However, this is to be expected when working with prospects. Frankly, many prospect never reach their full potential.
Conclusion Brian Burke remains in a strong position from a player management/development perspective. He has traded out Kris Versteeg and acquired Joffrey Lupul and Joe Colborne. In addition, he acquired two 1st round picks and a conditional 2nd that can be used to acquire another 1st line type player.
Although the team's top scoring forwards measure well against the best in the Northeast division, a play-making centre and bigger forwards are needed. Ideally, Toronto needs to add three to four players to its top nine. If not through acquisitions, this can be done through the development of its prospects.

1b. Front Squats with Barbell
A good rep scheme to use with this could be 3-4 sets of 8 reps for each exercise, or more sets for less reps, like five sets of five reps of each exercise. Mountain climbers can be done for a period interval [ such as 30 seconds.
Renegade dumbbell rows are done starting in a pushup position with the hands on two dumbbells. You then row one dumbbell up whilst holding your body with the other arm. Return the dumbbell back to the mat and alternate the rowing arm whilst holding with the opposite arm. This stabilizing effect in the rows creates amazing work for your whole midsection core area. Trust me...
Front squats are done like back squats, however with the barbell in front of your body on the front of your shoulders instead of resting on the upper back as in back squats. You stabilize the barbell on your shoulders by crossing your arms and pushing your fists into the bar against your shoulders whilst keeping your elbows out out front of the body.
This takes a little practice at first, so you may desire to seek a professional trainer at your gym to help you with the form. Front squats require extreme stabilization strength from the abs due to the barbell weight being shifted to the front of the body instead of the back. Though this is mostly a leg exercise, you can feel this one in the abs big time!

It kind of resembles climbing a mountain but flat on the floor. If you need a complicated version, you can also shuffle your hands 8-10 inches forward and backward in addition to the leg movements. This actually makes it a full body exercise and MUCH more difficult than standard mountain climbers.
After finishing each exercise, rest about thirty seconds before starting the next exercise.

Manusia memiliki dua dimensi kesadaran. Dalam ilmu Psikologi, konsep dasar untuk memahami manusia adalah tentang dinamika Psike. Secara etimologi Psike berarti seluruh proses kejiwaan manusia yang meliputi kesadaran dan ketidaksadarannya sebagai suatu totalitas kepribadian. Kesadaran manusia hanya berperan sebanyak 12% dan sisanya adalah ketidaksadaran (88%). Manusia memiliki potensi besar untuk melakukan tindakan yang tidak disadari dalam berperilaku sehari-hari.
Seorang ahli Psikologi Analitis, Carl Gustav Jung atau lebih dikenal dengan C.G. Jung (baca: Yung), menawarkan sebuah konsep Psike yang terdiri dari beberapa wilayah kejiwaan. Dunia kejiwaan, menurutnya terdiri dari; kesadaran, ketidaksadaran personal, dan ketidaksadaran kolektif. Dalam kesadaran, manusia dapat berhubungan langsung dengan dunia luar, dimana manusia bisa mengindera (sensation), berpikir secara logis (thinking), merasakan (feeling), meng-intuisi, dan memakai ingatannya (memory). Sedangkan dalam ketidaksadaran yang dibagi lagi menjadi 2 wilayah tersendiri, terdapat ketidaksadaran personal dan ketidaksadaran kolektif. Ketidaksadaran personal berisi kompleks yaitu sekumpulan perasan, pikiran, dan persepsi yang berhubungan dengan tema emosional tertentu. Misalnya, kata âIBUâ yang ditanyakan pada seseorang akan memiliki berbagai konsep yang unik dalam benak orang tersebut.
Wilayah terakhir adalah wilayah ketidaksadaran kolektif. Dalam ketidaksadaran kolektif ini berisi apa yang disebut dengan Arketipe-Arketipe. Arketipe (La Kahija, 2006 dalam Eksplorasi Ketidaksadaran) adalah kekuatan psikis terpenting yang paling dasar dalam kepribadian manusia. Secara umum arketipe adalah model awal atau blue-print yang menjadi pola dasar terbentuknya model-model lain. Setiap manusia memiliki arketipe ini, walau tampakan riilnya berbeda (ras, suku bangsa/warna kulit), tetapi setiap manusia memiliki cetak biru yang sama, yang telah diwariskan oleh manusia sebelumnya. Arketipe ini bersifat universal dan ada pada setiap manusia, walau tersembunyi.
Arketipe ini memiliki lima macam jenis yang utama, antaranya: Persona (topeng), Anima-Animus, Shadow, Kepribadian Mana, dan Self. Persona adalah arketipe yang selalu dimiliki oleh setiap manusia. Dengan persona, manusia melakukan peranannya sesuai dengan tuntutan sosialnya. Sebagai manusia yang terikat dengan kehidupan sosial, manusia dituntut untuk menyelaraskan diri dimana ia sedang berada. Pada saat dirumah, seorang laki-laki bisa berperan menjadi ayah bagi anaknya dan menjadi suami bagi istrinya, sedang diluar rumah perannya berganti menjadi seorang jaksa, misalnya, yang seharusnya tidak âpandang buluâ dalam mendakwa âpesakitanâ hukum karena tuntutan sosial yang mewajibkannya untuk menjadi sisi yang netral. Dari tahun ke tahun sejak era reformasi, banyak sekali para koruptur yang telah menampakkan sikap aslinya dengan menanggalkan persona-nya.
Catatan akhir tahun dalam SM (24/12), yang menuliskan bahwa korupsi di Jateng naik 100% membuktikan bahwa persona yang dipakai oleh para pejabat di lingkungan Jateng ini tidak ada gunanya lagi dan sudah masuk tong sampah. Pejabat korup yang seharusnya berperan sebagai pemimpin yang adil malah bertindak zalim dengan mengais yang bukan haknya. Mengapa mereka menammpakkan wajah aslinya dan menanggalkan personanya? Ini tak lain akibat terlalu banyaknya persona yang dimilikinya, sebagai seorang pejabat dia dituntut untuk berperilaku sesuai sumpah jabatan, sebagai suami/istri dan menjadi orangtua anak-anaknya dia dituntut untuk membahagiakan mereka, sebagai seorang simpatisan âpartaiâ dia dituntut untuk menyokong lembaganya, sebagai pejabat publik dia dituntut berperan menjadi donatur untuk kesejahteraan rakyatnya dan tentu saja menaikkan citra diri, dan sebagai manusia pribadi dia menuntut untuk mendapatkan hasil yang lebih dari seharusnya. Semuanya terakumulasi dalam diri seorang manusia dan tak jarang ada benturan kepentingan disana sehingga menyebabkan personanya goncang dalam menempatkan dirinya berdasarkan tempat ia seharusanya sadar berdiri di lingkup sosial yang mana. Kelemahan terbesar manusia adalah gampang tergoda, dan persona yang terlalu banyak mencitrakan diri seseoranglah yang paling mudah digoda untuk berperilaku yang bukan fitrahnya (bertindak sebagai khalifah yang adil).
Anima-Animus adalah arketipe kedua dimana arketipe ini memiliki konsep tentang jiwa yang saling berkebalikan. Dalam diri seorang laki-laki memiliki sisi feminin, sebaliknya dalam jiwa seorang perempuan terdapat pula sisi maskulin. Sepanjang tahun 2008 ini, fenomena mutilasi silih berganti bermunculan. Dari kekagetan pemberitaan âjagalâ dari Jombang, penemuan mayat di sebuah bus, hingga yang terakhir pembunuhan di Kopeng Semarang membuat banyak orang bertanya-tanya, kenapa tega melakukan perbuatan nista seperti itu? Dalam kasus Ryan, sebagai seorang lelaki fitrahnya adalah menyenangi perempuan tetapi ternyata anima-nyalah yang menguasai dirinya. Ryan menjadi sosok feminin yang cemburu buta melakukan mutilasi akibat terpicu oleh pesaingnya dalam memperoleh cinta sesamanya. Sosok anima yang lebih menekankan perasaan diatas rasio membuat orang yang terkuasainya menjadi tidak rasional dalam mengambil keputusan untuk bertindak. Hal ini sesuai dengan sisi feminin pada wanita umumnya yang lebih mengandalkan aspek perasaan daripada rasionalitas. Sedangkan pada penemuan mayat yang dimutilasi dalam sebuah bus, masyarakat dikagetkan dengan terkuaknya identitas pelaku yang ternyata seorang perempuan. Animus bereperan besar dalam diri pelaku, yang mencitrakan dirinya sebagai tampilan yang memiliki kekuatan dan bisa mendominasi (mengontrol) lingkungannya, dominasi adalah simbol dari kejantanan. Perilaku yang tega membunuh dan memutilasi korban yang ternyata adalah suaminya, menunjukkan adanya suatu otoritas yang ingin ditampilkan oleh pelaku pada lingkungan sosialnya terlebih pada sosok suaminya yang mengejawantahkan kalimat, âAku juga bisa jadi seperti kamuâ, laki-laki yang mendominasi. Memang banyak motif yang melingkupi kedua contoh kasus diatas tetapi yang utama adalah manusia yang memiliki jenis kelamin saat lahir tidak bisa lepas dari pewarisan blue-print dari nenek moyangnya berupa anima-animus. Seharusnya manusia bisa lebih menyadari kondisi fisiknya dalam melakukan suatu peranan dan cukup menyadari adanya anima-animus dalam diri tanpa harus dikuasai untuk menampilkan identitas sebagai lawan jenisnya.
Kasus terhangat dari akhir tahun 2008 adalah adanya pemberantasan premanisme. Berbagai media, baik cetak maupun elektronik mengangkat pemberitaan tentang maraknya razia preman oleh para aparat yang berwajib. Dalam ketidaksadaran kolektif terdapat arketipe yang bernama Shadow atau yang berarti bayangan dan sisi gelap manusia, dimana simbolisasinya adalah sesuatu yang mengerikan, menjijikkan, dan membuat manusia ketakutan begitu rupa. Premanisme tidak akan bisa diberantas secara tuntas selalu akan ada yang terus tumbuh menggantikan posisi yang ditinggalkan. Seperti halnya Shadow, arketipe ketiga, yang selalu ada dalam diri manusia, walau sudah ditolak untuk ditampilkan akan terus bercokol dikedalaman diri. Seorang preman yang beringas menampilkan lebih banyak Shadow yang memposisikan diri sebagai orang yang seram, sangar, agresif, dan memaksakan kehendak instingtifnya (nafsu). Jalan keluar dalam menjinakkan Shadow adalah dengan mengakui keberadannya, menerima sisi tergelap yang memang sudah ada dari sononya. Dalam konteks memperlakukan para preman, hendaknya kita dapat bersikap bijak untuk merangkul mereka dan mencari penyelesaian terbaik atas tingkah laku yang meresahkan masyarakat tanpa harus âmenghabisiâ satu per satu nyawa mereka.
Arketipe keempat, adalah Kepribadian Mana yang berarti kekuatan suci atau Ilahi. Mencuatnya lagi kasus Lia Eden dengan tampilannya yang berani untuk membubarkan semua agama pantas mewakili kehadiran Kepribadian Mana dalam dirinya. Pada diri manusia terdapat sebuah kekuatan yang powerfull yang berintikan kebijaksanaan. Orang yang bisa menampilkan Kepribadian Mananya secara wajar akan memperoleh suatu kekuatan dahsyat yang membawa diri pada tataran kebijakan yang lebih tinggi dari manusia umumnya. Sayangnya pada kasus Lia Eden dengan kerajaan surganya, Kepribadian Mana ini telah membanjiri jiwanya yang menyebabkan mengalami Megalomania. Megalomania adalah sebuah gangguan mental yang dicirikan dengan adanya delusi grandiosis dimana dia memiliki keyakinan bahwa dirinya adalah seorang Nabi dan menganggap dirinya punya kuasa atas segala hal. Secara sehat, manusia seharusnya sadar diri bahwa dia memiliki Kepribadian Mana dan dapat memperlakukannya secara wajar, karena jika dia sudah kebanjiran Mana yang ada hanya kesombongan (ketakaburan) yang nyata.
Arketipe yang paling tersembunyi adalah Self. Self dimiliki oleh setiap manusia tetapi hanya sedikit manusia yang bisa menjangkau Self-nya. Self adalah diri terdalam, pusat dari arketipe. Self tersembunyi diantara arketipe-arketipe yang lain dan memperoleh kekuatan darinya. Pencarian diri terdalam inilah fitrah manusia sesungguhnya, dimana manusia diwajibkan untuk menemukan âdiriâ di dalam dirinya. Proses pencarian diri ini disebut dengan Individuasi Diri (Self Individuation). Manusai modern kini telah melupakan fitrahnya untuk mencari Self ini sehingga membuat kaum manusia menjadi berperilaku abnormal dan mengalami patologis, salah satu perwujudannya adalah manusia menjadi kaum yang hedonis, individualistis (apatis), kapitalis, dan menyingkirkan ajaran agamanya. Kasus bunuh diri, pembunuhan, penyerangan, dan tawur massal diantaranya adalah refleksi dari ketidakmampuan manusia dalam menarik Self-nya. Sebagai manusia yang paripurna dan sehat, seharusnya dalam masing-masing diri individu mau menggali diri dengan analisis diri untuk bisa bertemu Self-nya.
Tugas akhir tahun kita sekarang adalah menganalisis diri, sejauh mana kita telah memperlakukan diri, melakukan kegiatan apa saja, dan telah mendapatkan hasil apa untuk selanjutnya menemukan apa yang terdalam dari semua rangkaian hidup yang telah terlewati satu tahun ini. Seperti nasehat bijak dari Ki Ageng Soerjamentraman, tokoh yang menginspirasi dalam Psikologi Jawa yang didedah oleh Budayawan Darmanto Jatman, tidak ada salahnya kita sebagai manusia lebih mawas diri dalam mengarungi tahun selanjutnya menghadapi masa yang penuh dengan âkesamaranâ, misalnya merespon dengan bijak terpaan krisis global yang membayangi nasib kaum buruh. Amazing vintage dress I bought for myself and would keep but is not my size (I didn't try it on in the shop) and I think it will be amazing on someone else. Metal zipper, zips down the side. Lining at the back of the skirt section is torn but you can't see (or feel, for that matter) this when worn. There is a tiny hole in the black ribbon in the frill which doesn't stand out at all, as pictured above. Otherwise excellent condition!

Absolutely amazing 1950s cotton sundress that I am sad to let go of but it just is not my size. It is for a taller (longer torsoâd) lady than me, and is quite busty too â basically this was an Etsy purchase where the measurements provided disappointed. Still, the floral print and soft cotton are gorgeous and I spent several months (I bought it in winter) trying to convince myself that it could work on me, if I always stood at an angle... that kind of thing. Of course, it won't work on me. There were also a couple of flaws with this piece: a small rip near the bust (now fixed) and some pink marks in the skirt which I got out with some soakings, but I think in some lights can still be seen, and Iâve included a photo of the most obvious one â but as you can see, itâs really hard to spot at all (hooray for Napisan!). I also noticed a little tear in the fabric near the hem and havenât sewn it up. Price reflects these issues. Zips down the side. Really soft and pretty summer dress.

Great vintage cotton sundress with red and white stripes and button detail on bodice. Metal zipper down the back. Cute short sleeves and square neckline. Love how the stripes go in different directions down the centre â a bit of a thing for me, it seems! I think there is slight yellowing under the arms, but I couldnât photograph it or see it in that daylight, so they must be very faint, but I want to mention everything, obviously :) Great condition and great dress! All buttons are present and correct, the dress just folded a bit when I took photos and hid one of them!

Great simple summer dress in a light cotton blend.

A. LATAR BELAKANG MASALAH
Indonesia adalah negara kesatuan yang terdiri dari beribu-ribu pulau. Indonesia memiliki keragaman budaya atau âcultural diversityâ adalah keniscayaan yang ada di bumi Indonesia.Keragaman budaya di Indonesia adalah sesuatu yang tidak dapat dipungkiri keberadaannya.Dalam konteks pemahaman masyarakat majemuk, selain kebudayaan kelompok sukubangsa, masyarakat Indonesia juga terdiri dari berbagai kebudayaan daerah bersifat kewilayahan yang merupakan pertemuan dari berbagai kebudayaan kelompok sukubangsa yang ada didaerah tersebut.Dengan jumlah penduduk 200 juta orang dimana mereka tinggal tersebar dipulau- pulau di Indonesia.Mereka juga mendiami dalam wilayah dengan kondisi geografis yang bervariasi.Mulai dari pegunungan, tepian hutan, pesisir, dataran rendah, pedesaan, hingga perkotaan.Hal ini juga berkaitan dengan tingkat peradaban kelompok-kelompok sukubangsa dan masyarakat di Indonesia yang berbeda. Pertemuan-pertemuan dengan kebudayaan luar juga mempengaruhi proses asimilasi kebudayaan yang ada di Indonesia sehingga menambah ragamnya jenis kebudayaan yang ada di Indonesia. Kemudian juga berkembang dan meluasnya agama-agama besar di Indonesia turut mendukung perkembangan kebudayaan Indonesia sehingga memcerminkan kebudayaan agama tertentu.Bisa dikatakan bahwa Indonesia adalah salah satu negara dengan tingkat keaneragaman budaya atau tingkat heterogenitasnya yang tinggi.Tidak saja keanekaragaman budaya kelompok sukubangsa namun juga keanekaragaman budaya dalam konteks peradaban, tradsional hingga ke modern, dan kewilayahan.
Bangsa Indonesia adalah bangsa yang memiliki beragam suku bangsa yang tersebar dari sabang sampai merauke. Beragamnya suku bangsa tersebut yang menimbulkan beragamnya kebudayaan di Indonesia. Budaya adalah cara hidup yang berkembang dan dimiliki bersama oleh sebuah kelompok orang yang diwariskan dari generasi sebelumnya. Budaya terbentuk dari banyak unsur yang rumit termasuk system agama dan politik, adat istiadat, bahasa, perkakas, pakaian, bangunan, dan karya seni.
Apa yang diajarkan kepada kita selama ini tentang kebudayaan telah membentuk suatu keyakinan bahwa kebudayaan itu merupakan blue-printyang telah menjadi kompas dalam perjalanan hidup manusia, ia menjadi pedoman dalam tingkah laku. Pandangan semacam ini pun telah menyebabkan peneliti menurut keberlanjutan kebudayaan itu pada ekspresi simbolik individu dan kelompok, terutama untuk melihat bagaimana proses pewarisan nilai itu terjadiseperti yang dibayangkan Clifford Geertz bahwa kebudayaan itu, âmerupakan pola dari pengertian-pengertian atau makna-makna yang terjalin secara menyeluruh dalam symbol-simbol dan ditransmisikan secara historisâ (Geertz, 1973:89). Pada bagian selanjutnya Geertz juga mengatakan bahwa kebudayaan itu âmerupakan system mengenai konsepsi-konsepsi yang diwariskan dalam bentuk simbolik, yang dengan cara ini manusia dapat berkomunikasi, melestarikan, dan mengembangkan pengetahuan dan sikapnya terhadap kehidupanâ.
B. RUMUSAN MASALAH

2. Bagaimanakan dampak dan cara menanggapi perbedaan budaya yang ada di Indonesia?
3. Bagaimanakah contoh perbedaan budaya di Indonesia?
A. ARTI BUDAYA
Seperti yang telah dituliskan oleh Harrison dan Huntington, âIstilah âbudayaâ, tentu saja, mempunyai arti banyak dalam disiplin ilmu serta konteks yang berbeda.â Sifat sulit untuk dipahami ini mungkin dapat dicerminkan dalam fakta bahwa pada awal tahun 1952 ulasan tentang literature antropologi mengungkap 164 definisi berbeda dari kata budaya. Seperti yang dikemukakan oleh Lonner dan malpass, definisi ini, âmencakup pengertian yang merupakan pemrograman pikiranâ atau budaya merupakan yang dibuat manusia dalam lingkunganâ. Media juga menggunakan kata ini untuk menggambarkan aspek yang mengagumkan dalam diri manusia seperti musik klasik, ilmu seni atau makanan dan anggur yang luar biaasa. Hal ini, tentu saja bukanlah cara yang kita rencanakan dalam menggunakan kata ini. Untuk tujuan kita, kita memerhatikan pengertian yang mengandung tema babagaimana budaya dan komunikasi itu berhubungan. Satu pengertian yang memenuhi persyaratan tersebut adalah yang dijabarkan oleh Triandis: âKebudayaan merupakan elemen subjektif dan objektif yang dibuat manusia yang di masa lalu meningkatkan kemungkinan untuk bertahan hidup dan berakibat dalam kepuasan pelaku dalam ceruk ekologis, dan demikian tersebar diantara mereka yang dapat berkomunikasi satu sama lainnya, karena mereka mempunyai kesamaan bahasa dan mereka hidup dalam waktu dan tempat yang samaâ.
B. Penyebab Perbedaan Budaya
1. Faktor adat istiadat
Faktor adat istiadat adalah nilai tidak bersifat universal artinya tidak untuk setiap masyarakat/kelompok menerima nilai tersebut, sehingga nilai antara suatu daerah dengan daerah lainya berbeda-beda.Contoh: adat istiadat masyarakat SUNDA dengan masyarakat JAWA tengah berbeda.
2. Faktor agama
Faktor agama adalah faktor yg paling mempengaruhi norma dan nilai , karena di setiap agama berbeda pantangan dan ibadah nya.Contoh : di agama islam alkohol dan daging babi itu HARAM tetapi di agama lain tidak di haram kan.
3. Faktor lingkungan (tempat tinggal)
Faktor lingkungan adalah faktor lingkungan pun berperan dalam pembedaan nilai dan norma setiap daerah / tempat masingâ.Contoh : lingkungan di pasar sangat berbeda dengan lingkungan di perumahan, jika di pasar ada pereman yg galak tetapi d daerah komplek tdk ada preman (yg memegang/ menarik bayaranâmajegâ)
4. Faktor kebiasaan
Faktor kebiasaan adalah faktor yg d pengaruhi oleh sering tidak nya orang itu melaksanakan suatu pekerjaan.Contoh : orang yg berada di pesantren sudah terbiasa membaca Al- Quran dan salat, tetapi orang yg berada di Jalanâ luar belum tentu terbiasa salat dan membaca AL-Quran.
5. Faktor tradisi/ budaya
Faktor budaya adalah budaya di dlam suatu masyarakat/kelompok berbeda-beda, begitu pun juga norma dan nilai di dlam suatu masyarakat berbeda-beda, jadi hubungan antara buda dan nilai yaitu suatu norna di dalam suatu masyarakat memiliki perbedaan masing-masing.
6. Faktor Suku
Suku-Suku Di Indonesia Bermacam-Macam Ada Suku Sunda, Jawa , Minang Dan Lain-Lain.Setiap Suku Memiliki Suatu Nilai Dan Norma Yang Berbeda-Beda, Contohnya Jika Di Jawa Barat Di Dlam Suatu Pernikahaan Itu Yang Melamar Laki-Laki, Teapi Di Sumatra Barat Yang Melamar Itu Perempuan.
C. Akibat dan Cara Menanggapi Perbedaan Budaya
Perbedaan budaya tidak jarang menimbulkan konflik dalam kehidupan.Perpecahan antar suku bangsa yang didasarkan oleh perbedaan nilai tidak dapat dipungkiri dalam kenyataannya.Seperti yang terjadi pada konflik Poso, Ambon dan tragedi Sampit.Maka harapan Indonesia menciptakan Indonesia bersatu menekankan adanya pekerjaan yang harus diselesaikan terlebih dahulu.Pekerjaan adanya perpecahan dalam persatuan.Dan dibutuhkan penyelesaiannya.
Antara suku bangsa yang satu dengan suku bangsa yang lain harus membuka diri. Sehingga perbedaan dalam memandang suatu hal dapat berakibat pada ketidak sesuaian.Maka hal yang ditakutkan terjadinya disintegrasi didalamnya.Indonesia dengan suku yang berbeda seolah memberikan gambaran kuatnya potensi konflik.Bangsa Indonesia memiliki permasalahan dalam hal nilai diantara etnisnya.
Berikut ini adalah cara kita menghadapi perbedaan budaya:

3. Mengembangkan Sikap Nasionalisme
4. Menyelesaikan Konflik secara Akomodatif
5. Menegakkan Fungsi Hukum
6. Mengembangkan Kesadaran Peranan
D. Contoh Perbedaan Budaya
Salah satu contoh budaya yang berbeda adalah suku sunda dengan suku lampung. Ulun lampung adalah suku yang menempati seluruh provinsi Lampung dan sebagian provinsi Sumatera Selatan. Suku Sunda adalah kelompok etnis yang berasal dari bagian barat pulau Jawa, Indonesia, yang mencakup wilayah administrasi provinsi Jawa Barat, Banten, Jakarta, dan Lampung.
1. Rumah Adat
Rumah adat lampung yang sering disebut Lamban, Lambahana atau Nuwou. Lamban biasanya terbuat dari kayu an berbentuk rumah paggung. Sedangkan rumah adat sunda disebut dengan imah. Imah terbuat dari kayu dan berdinding bambu. Seperti halnya lamban, imah juga beratap ijuk. Imah juga berbentuk rumah panggung dengan tinggi kolong 0,5-1 meter, sedangkan tinggi kolong pada rumah adat lampung lebih tinggi.
Di dalam komunikasi sehari-hari orang suku lampung menggunakan bahasa lampung, sedangkan suku sunda menggunakan bahasa sunda. Pada komunikasi tertulis, orang lampung menggunakan aksara kaganga, sedangkan suku sunda menggunakan aksara ngalagena.
3. Sistem kekeluargaan
Suku lampung menganut sistem patrilineal, yaitu suatu masyarakat hukum, di mana para anggotanyamenarik garis keturunan ke atas melalui garis bapak, bapak dari bapak, teruske atas, sehingga akhirnya dijumpai seorang laki-laki sebagai moyangnya. Sedangkan suku sunda menggunakan Sistem Parental atau Bilateral, yaitu masyarakat hukum, di mana paraanggotanya menarik garis keturunan ke atas melalui garis Bapak dan Ibu,terus ke atas, sehingga dijumpai seorang laki-laki dan seorang perempuansebagai moyangnya.
Secara umum, alur pernikahan antara suku lampung dan suku sunda hampir sama. Di dalam adat lampung upacara yang dilakukan sebelum pernikahan antara lain nindai/nyubuk, nunang (ngelamar), yirok (ngikat), berunding (menjeu), sesimburan (dimandikan), betanges (mandi uap) dan berparas (meucukur). Selain itu, di tempat keluarga gadis dilaksanakan 3 acara pokok dalam 2 malam, yaitu Maro Nanggep, Cangget pilangan dan Temu di pecah aji. Sedangkan di Sunda upacara yang dilakukan adalah neundeun omong (berjanji), galamar / nyeureuhan / nanyaan (meminang), papacangan (tunangan), seserahan (menyerahkan), helaran (iring-iringan), ngeuyeuk seureuh (menyiapkan sirih pinang) dan siraman (memandikan calon pengantin). Perbedaannya terletak pada saat memandikan calon pengantin, pada adat lampung calon pengantin wanita mandi bersama dengan wanita-wanita lain, sedangkan pada adat sunda wanita dimandikan oleh ibu, nenek dan sesepuh wanita lainnnya.
Pada hari pernikahan, ijab kabul pada prosesi pernikahan adat lampung dilakukan di tempat pengantin pria, sedangkan pada pernikahan sunda dilaksanakan di tempat mempelai pria. Setelah pernikahan di dalam adat Sunda ada upacara nebus atau numbas yaitu selamatan, sedangkan di dalam adat lampung tidak ada.
Â§ Perbedaan kebudayaan di Indonesia disebabkan oleh faktor adat istiadat, agama, lingkungan, kebiasaan, tradisi/ budaya dan suku yang berbeda.
Â§ Perbedaan kebudayaan seringkali menyebabkan konflik dan perpecahan. Untuk menanggapi keadaan tersebut kita harus mengembangkan sikap toleran, meninggalkan sikap primordialisme, mengembangkan sikap nasionalisme, menyelesaikan konflik secara akomodatif, menegakkan fungsi hukum dan mengembangkan kesadaran peranan
Â§ Salah satu contoh kebudayaan yang berbeda adalah kebudayaan Lampung dan Sunda jika dilihat dari rumah adat, sistem kekeluargaan, komunikasi, dan tradisi pernikahan.

|A perfect holiday card?||So, I had a devo prepared.|
It was Christmas-season related, on Zachariah and Elizabeth.
But it was preachy. And while I can be hard on myself, its not a great read for others.
Let me suffice to say; I love our God. He uses the most unexpected people and the most interesting ways to show himself.
Today I'm thinking about Mary, the mother of Jesus.
I don't get why I'm in Arusha, Tanzania doing an internship for monitoring programs for protecting abused children.
I wish God would show me His blue-print; how this fits into the bigger map of my life.
Yes, I have always wanted to learn Swahili. Yes,this is making me grow as a personal and will probably benefit me career-wise. Yes, I get to skip a coooooold winter in Canada.
I love Arusha! And I'm having a great time.
And while I'm not complaining, I just don't understand. In Canada I was praying about adopting children and asking God to prepare me to be a mother.
In my mind, that meant a steady full-time job, and a house. Maybe a spouse (that would be nice).
But God gave me an amazing opportunity to learn about behind-the-scenes of NGO's, working for the protection of children. While I'm not loving it, I am learning and it is good- which as I've discussed before, being good is so much better than my own personal enjoyment.
However, I don't understand how this fits in with God's plan. How this isn't a hiccup in my life, but actually part of His master collaboration to form me into the person whom he wants me to be, use my life according to His outline.
Now look at Mary. Who 2014 or so years ago was pregnant right now. (maybe, depending on the time of Jesus's birth).
She had plans to have a family, too. She was engaged. She probably imagined starting her marriage and family in a completely different way. But God had other plans- seemingly absurd plans at the time. God's plans were beyond different- they were scandalous!
Mary didn't even get to give birth to Jesus indoors. He was born in a stable. And here I am, wondering how I'm gonna have a house to adopt kids in the future. Not an obstacle (or maybe even a priority) to God.
Mary wasn't married when she became pregnant. It was her obedience God wanted; being a single woman wasn't an issue or obstacle for God to bring His Son to this earth. And still I think I'm supposed to be married before I adopt.
Mary wasn't in her home town, among her family when she had Jesus- she was with Joseph in Bethlehem, with his family. Not long after Jesus was born they fled as refugees to Egypt.
Why do I think I need to be 'established' somewhere, or with my career?
What God required of Mary and of Joseph was obedience.
That took faith, because they couldn't see how God was moving. They didn't understand His plan.
And that was on a much larger scale than my life right now.
So what if I don't understand why God brought me to Arusha to do this internship? So what if I don't see the picture?
I am still required to be obedient and faithful. I still follow God.
It's very Christmas-y, don't you think?
Blind obedience, trusting when you don't understand.

Mountain climbers can be done for a period interval [ such as 30 seconds.
You then row one dumbbell up whilst holding your body with the other arm. Believe me... you'll feel it in the abs! Great ab & core exercise.
You stabilize the barbell on your shoulders by crossing your arms and pushing your fists into the bar against your shoulders whilst keeping your elbows out out front of the body.
Even though this is often a leg exercise, you will feel this one in the abs big time!

For rock hard abs front squats - surprisingly is a good abdominal exercise

Mountain climbers are done by beginning in a pushup position and then shuffling your feet in so that your knees are moving in under your chest and then back out to beginning position. It sort of resembles climbing a mountain but flat on the floor. If you need a complicated version, you can also shuffle your hands 8-10 inches forward and backward as well as the leg movements.

After finishing each exercise, rest about 30 seconds before beginning the next exercise.

In 1989, I was taken to see a little film called Batman. The following birthday I received a toy Batmobile based of the same Tim Burton film, I fell in Love.

The model is presented in a nice clear plastic case on a detailed base which contains the die-cast Batmobile, a tiny Michael Keaton style Batman figure, couple of oil drums for effect which work nicely with the 3D lenticular background card (which as far as I can tell is of an explosion at the ACME Chemicals plant).
The only complaint if have is very slight, the transparent plastic case top has a mark that's been left by the injection moulding process and in an attempt to hide this the decision has been made to place a small Bat-symbol sticker as cover, this doesn't look great as the mark leaves a bulge in the sticker. Also you can see joins on the oil drums where two half's have been stuck together, again these are minor gripes.
Overall as a life long Bat-Fan, in really happy with the result and would advise any fan or even model car collector to pick this up.
